Have just been to surgery to have tetanus boost which I needed because we are travelling to Spain, Portugal and France at end of March. Nurse asked where we were going and where we were staying. Advised her that we had a motorhome and would be stopping on aires and sites. She advised that there were area in France and Spain where Japanese encephalitis was and also rabies through bat bites in the ‘African areas’ of Spain. She has given my wife and I forms to complete which goes into great details as to where we are going and what we will be doing. From the answers given, they will decide what injections we require.
Has anyone else heard of the encephalitis/rabies problem in France, Spain and Portugal?

news to me ? Last case of rabies here in spain was a few years back & someone returning from Morocco using pet paperwork which was forged. I believe that was first since 1975 ?

Having had a rummage the only thing I can find is of a spaniard who contracted it in Thailand in 2012

You could get any serious illness at any time, in any country. The risk differs depending on where you are.
To my mind, if you're sensible you reduce the risk. Not touching animals, including dogs other than your own, never attempting to touch a feral cat, are sensible precautions.
Carry a good basic first aid kit.
Check yourself ( & each other) for ticks, any mosquitoe bites that might look red/ angry/ infected.
Cover any cuts until healed.
Wash hands frequently.
Just the basic common sense things we all do.
I survived several months living in an African compound, treating some grim minor injuries and health conditions in the school. Many weeks spent in an Eastern European kids home, grimmest conditions I've even seen ( or smelt) Wasn't Ill once.
Just be sensible and if in doubt err on the side of caution.
And stay away from bats ! If you're ever concerned seek medical advice ASAP and pharmacists are very knowledgeable if you are not near a hospital/ medical centre.

Thanks for your thoughts
