Was going to France as usual! In two weeks time but because of current situation now thinking of going up to Scotland! Our hit list for some time has been to go on the steam train from FORT WILLIAM so our thinking is to stay on campsite there for a few days ( take train journey) then move on!but where?Been to Skye! Will have about 2 1/2 weeks before having to return south. Not been north of Oban!Like sea! Fishing harbours! Now 75 and 76 so walking miles is sadly behind us☹️

We were booked to go on the Jacobite earlier this year and had booked Bunree CAMC site, about 10 miles south of Fort William

How did you get to Skye without going north of Oban?

Was at Fort William last weekend. As mentioned Bunree if you can get booked in. Ample free parking for motorhome at the station in Fort William. If you can't get booked into Bunree, travel up the road from Fort William to Mallag. I know you do not want to go to Skye but just before you get to Mallag is a campsite called Silversands. Its on the river. You can then park the motorhome at the car park near Mallag station and get the train return to Fort William. A plus going to Mallag is that on route to Mallag you can stop off at the Viaduct lots of parking at the National Trust car park and a walk up the path to a viewing area and watch the up and down scheduled train go over the viaduct. You will get loads of Harry Potter fans just waiting to see this. Aim, to get there around 2.30pm and both trains are around the 3.00pm and 3.20pm.
Then from the Campsite take the internal road down towards Isle of Mull some outstanding scenery. We were there Monday and Tuesday, if you do not want to go over to Mull you can cut all the way round back towards Fort William but get the £8.50 ferry over to near Bunree campsite.

Hope this helps

Was there last week. Delightful.
How were the midges? We’re heading to Glen Nevis close to Fort William tomorrow.. I’m a little worried about them as we’ve checked the Smidge forecast and it’s looking grim

Fort William last weekend was bad. The weather was great with little wind. Sitting out till about 5-6pm at Bunree then they were out in force. Headed upto Skye and again weather outstanding and little wind. Parking up near the coast there was a few about. Inland the evening was a nightmare.
Now down in Mull and no midges wall to wall sunshine but a nice solid breeze when we were on the beach and sat out at 7pm no midges.

You need to plan a bit ahead for water fill and dumping. Glencoe mountain resort has closed access to their water/elson last week. It appears that in the evening many MH were parking up in the car park using the showers and facilities and not leaving payment. From what I have read on Facebook, they shut the facilities for non booked in MH and it appears they have staff on site in the evening to enforce this. We have managed to get onto local sites either staying a night or asking to use facilities and offering to pay. Have been charged on average £5 for this.

Here’s an option, wild camp at Malliag’s harbour (don’t obscure any life rings or you get told off), take the bus to Fort William, have a mooch around the town, then take the Jacobite (pre booked of course) back up to Malliag. Then go home or take the ferry over to Skye.

One of our most memorable short trips 😎👌

If I remember correctly it's much cheaper to turn up on the day and buy a ticket. There always seem to be spaces saved for day ticket passengers. Pay the conductor

No chance these days ☹️

Not too bad last week - but having visited Ullapool 4x per year for years until recently, we 're pretty used to them. A decent repellant and stay in the van in the evening and it was ok up there last week.

I've rebooked bunree for next year in anticipation of using this year's voucher for the Jacobite once bookings are open.

I take it that non-awning pitches are the ones to go for, right on the Loch edge 👍

The "front line" next to the sea are non-awning. There are a couple of awning ones at the burn mouth from memory.
Try and get a pitch towards the dog walk area \ burn mouth as the front line ones at the other end don't get the sun (aye right!) until later in the morning.
Non-awning pitches 29 upwards are probably the better ones

Had one hell of a job to book 2 weeks ago for first two weeks in Sept. Were Looking at Oban/ Fort William/ Mallaig
Big sites no chance, I could get one night here one night there. After numerous emails and calls I managed to get 3x4nights in small sites. So frustrating.
