I have never visited Birmingham so no idea what affect this will have on drivers but would appreciate your local knowledge. The zone encompasses all roads within Birmingham's A4540 Middleway Ring Road, except the ring road itself, and is operational 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including bank holidays.

I expect most cities will bring this in eventually, it's a cash cow and over time may even help with pollution, although I doubt it will make much difference to that. Here in Southampton they tried to bring it in but didn't succeed, I'm sure they'll try again. In London, where my daughter lives she will have to replace her car in a few months because she lives inside the North circular, the council have closed off an entrance to her road forcing all traffic on to the already crowded North circular this is causing far more pollution than will be saved by the ELEZ, think of hundreds of cars in almost stationery traffic for an extra 20 minutes twice a day. They don't care about that, as long as it looks good.

Our local town has like many has recently introduced narrowing of roads for pedestrians and new one way systems, traffic is now queuing along the new narrowed one way systems where there were no queues before, So I suspect some warped perspective will be ticking a box thinking 'that has worked well' in the hope drivers will just give up and leave cars at home. The local councils have access to cash to implement these schemes but none for fixing potholes etc.

The day of car individual ownership is coming to an end, recently attended a EV seminar for repairing, it become obvious that costs are going to be high in servicing and long term repairs.
Adapt or perish I guess as for the smallest molecules to our life form it equally applies

I would accept far less car use if they gave us an alternative, long distance, train very expensive, dirty and unreliable, short distance bus, not often suitable route to get to destination without multiple changes, also expensive and dirty. The way to get people out of cars is to give us a better way to travel, other countries seem to be able to do it but here they only seem to worry about ticking boxes not finding solutions.
