If Jim hadn't created MHF and this forum, then I wouldn't have created that post Where did you turn the corner and go "Wow!" in an idle moment and I wouldn't be sitting here now with Corner Envy (?) wanting to visit all the amazing places you guys have posted about.

We had friends who went to see the Northern Lights recently, who've enthused about it endlessly, but one photo from Terry242 and I'm googling how far it is to Tromso (a VERY long way, going to have to broach this carefully with MrS...).

Sigh ;)

Jim`s got a lot to answer to...

I was a sensible upright pillar of society and a gentleman before I joined "Fun"...:(
Admittedly I'm a bit of a newbie, but I thought you still are?
"One who marries for love alone will have bad days but good nights.
The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen nor even touched, but just felt in the heart."

Sentiments of a true gentleman in my book ;)

We went to Tromso a few summers ago from home near Limoges. It is 1800 kms to the port in Denmark to catch the ferry to Norway. You are still nowhere near halfway!!! I think in total we did 11000 kms that trip. Not great if it rains a lot!!

I am hoping to live until i am 187 years old to see half the places people have listed.
Have to say the 7,500Ks we did in Aussy last year was a bit special. Some sights in them thar Blue Mountains.

We live fairly near you WJACC, near Parthenay, so probably 11000 kms for us too. But did you see the Lights? Were they as good as the photo??

Do I need to be careful? Don't want Jim offering me a free week in Coventry  as a consolation prize :ROFLMAO:

No we went in the summer when it was 24 hours of sunshine when in the Arctic Circle and then 24 hours of grey light, rain and drizzle when in southern Norway.

I would have thought you needed to be up there late September and after for the 'lights'.

My bother in law, 40 years ago, used to go there to study the lights for the UK govt. He would go in mid winter, but only because he got paid to go, with full cold weather gear etc.

thanks WJACC - it was the full cold weather gear that put me off when friends were telling us about it. Didn't think - of course it is 24 hr daylight in the summer... 24hrs of grey, rain and drizzle not doing it for me either! Will have a rethink...

When we were in the Arctic Circle during June it was beautiful, about 20-22C. The snow line on the hills was only at about 200 metres, the lakes were still frozen. The lowest the sun got was about 25 degrees above the horizon. When the sun wasn't shining it could be as low as 6-10 degrees during the day.
