I'm just trying to do a bit of research for a trip down through Italy to Sicily and as expected, anything to do with the Italians gets confusing. Has anyone done this trip before and which ferry route did you take. I have read up that the ferries operate from places like Naples to Palermo. However the AA route planner suggest there is a ferry much closer from Italy to Sicily across the Merssina straights. Can anyone throw any light

Did it 3 years ago. Just north of Reggio di Calabria ( Villa San Giovanni) to Messina. Just turn up, 90 euros from memory for a 3 month open return. Don't miss the incredible Riace Bronzes in their purpose built museum in Reggio, which is reputedly the Mafia capital of Italy.

Great, many thanks for the info. Just what I was hoping for.
