10 years after many years tugging
Well before we plan anything these days we consult Motorhome fun ..... The Google for motorhomers...... Brilliant , rapid response and very informative. So ...we've been invited to a wedding in Tuscany end of May. We intend to do Dover Dunkerque then use free motorways as much as possible .... probably through Innsbruck . Worried about crossing Austria cos when we did Croatia the Go box binged too regularly ..... Cost a bomb!!! Got 8 plus metre Motorhome so bit wary of tolls but also wary of windy mountain passes!!! Possibly visit Lake Garda . Fancy visiting Florence. We've got acsi and have french aired book from vicarious. Is the Italian one any good? Anyone subscribed to the Dutch camper stop app? Would that be any good to us? Thinking of returning via coast into France and the Cote d'azure. Anywhere good for canoeing? Millau and gorge de tarn seems bit too far over . Quite a list of questions but any advice welcome. Cheers !

Lake Garda - last time we were there we used a MH only campsite at Torbole, north end of the lake. I think there was a time limit on stopovers, at least 48 hours, maybe 72. Good for looking at Riva del Garda where you can catch the ferry.

We've also used the campsite here (45.479320, 10.725995), next door to the Aqua Paradise water park which can best be described as mental on a good day. Also it's just down the lane from the Rock Star All You Can Eat diner which is worth a visit if you're feeling peckish. This campsite has the option of stopping aire-style in their car park for a reduced fee. However the lakeside south of Lazise is basically one huge swathe of campsites so you're spoiled for choice there.

For Florence we stopped on the Norceni Girasole campsite at Figlione Valdarno and caught the local train into the city. The campsite had a little choo choo shuttle bus thing that took you to the station and back. I seem to remember fairly tight terraced pitches so if you go for it you might want to inquire about fitting an 8m MH in.

In Tuscany we've used the 'aire' at Siena (car park behind shops) and the privately-run aire just downhill from San Gimignano which was OK. There's also one beside the little village of Monteriggioni not far from Siena which looked a bit quieter than the shop car park one.

You can go toll free via austria. Head for fussen then fern pass, reich pass etc.... This will take you down left sidevofvlake Garda, lots of campsites around lake.......Do a search, route on here somewhere?

We stop of at lake Garda every year (10 on the trot so far) going to tuscany again ourselves this summer..it is our favourite destination by far!

Found this, better info:

we go to Italy/lake garda every year in the summer, either via switzerland or germany/austria. After a week in Alsace headed to Lake constance for a few nights then down to Fussen, and take the non-toll route through Austria via Reutte and Nessereith (Fernpass), and then to Imst, Landeck, Pfunds, and Nauders for the Reschenpass. Then Merano, Bolzano. down west side of Garda (avoid right side of lake - tight tunnels!!!)

Just noticed that the OP has a Hymer.

Could it be that Austria will want them to 'rent' a Go Box (Poss. Over 3500kgs)

I'll consider myself well and truly Rolloxed.
However, for the benefit of the Op and to answer the question posed , should the OP make a faux pas and tiptoe onto a motorway, (and we've, sorry some of us have made a mistake or two in our lives) you could get well and truly hammered for going on said Motorway without an automatic toll grabber, which is what a Go Box is.
