Just came across this article. Its in German but google automatically translated it using Chrome on my laptop. Might be of interest if your heading to Italy this year (or next). Lots of other interesting stuff on the main website too if your browser will translate it.

We wandered down Italy down the westcoast 6 weeks in Scilly then back via the heel and Adriatic coast. About 3 months total. Stayed mostly in Sostas but also in farmyards lay-bys and a few campsites. Loved every moment the itialians are wonderful friendly people.

You'll never regret it

Sounds fantastic. Italy is my favourite country. I think I need an Aperol spritz..... right now!

Some sostas in Italy are only a few euros less than a campsite so check the prices first. We stayed at an ACSI campsite at one place and had lots of grassy space around us and we were under the shade of trees. From memory it was something like €18 a night with electricity. There was a sosta not far away without shade, dusty ground and MHs packed like sardines and they were charging €15 a night. I was happy with the €3 supplement we were paying.

There are some good ones of course but also duds. :)
