Sorry, I know this is the bane of every funsters life but its an important one!
I have a thetford 200 in this new to me van, and so far never been lucky enough to get away in nice weather, I’m great at picking the bad weekends☹️
But this weekend we’ve struck gold however the smell of urine from the toilet is something else even though the cassette was fresh before we come away. I’ve ordered a freshen up kit of cassette and seat but in preparation is there anything else I can do? I have green fluid in the tank, used thetford bathroom cleaner on the bowl and even added a splash of bio liquid and it smells terrible. Any tricks before I install the cassette and clean the holding area?

Yippee a toilet thread.

If you are just doing No 1's in them that makes them stink you need some of the brown stuff to get the bacteria working.

Also the plastic bowls tend to retain the smell and need a clean every few days, the Thetford bathroom cleaner works well at getting rid of the smells. Toilet wipes don't work.

Have you put some water and green or bio liquid in the empty tank?
Secondly take the cassette out and check in the area under where it fits, there are 2 wells that collect anything that leaks from the cassette, they might need wiping out.

Yes to both the water and liquid. It’s horrific but I will clean out the wells before the new one is installed because currently us two girls feel like we are sat in a public loo after it’s been open 13 hours!

Very strange. You are closing the cassette after each use?

Another spot that can get really bad is the joint between the swivel bowl and base. Happens when blokes sit on the loo because of the poor design. The only way to clean it properly is to take the bowl off - that's fun but not that difficult.

Think I’m going to have to do a full cleaning action! Due to covid I have thousands of masks for my disposal so may be handy in this case 😷

I learnt many years ago that kitty litter is an essential, especially if you travel with kids. Perfect and designed for the purpose of toilet spills

Stinky wee needs dealing with using the right chemicals to neutralise it. A normal toilet you would use an alkaline bleach, but that will damage the plastic and rubber seals in a van. The Pink top flush is ideal and you mix it with water in a spray bottle. You used to add it to the flush water tank on older toilets, but can't with a tank fed flush

Also the flush itself on the plastic bog is somewhat less effective than a household toilet cistern. You need a different mindset when using a chemical khazi. As already mentioned it is not the poo that stinks, it is the residual urea. Wee flush, then spray the bowl after closing the shutter. The pink stuff is fragranced, but the mild chemicals in it neutralises the residue.

Yes they are, if you pardon the pong/pun,

My cassette is original and came with a lovely brown internal coating that was made of I don't want to think of what and would cause the emptied & rinsed cassette to hum like the 'flying pickets'.

I took to steeping it in a bleach/detergent mix after trips and this seemed to calm it down a lot - that and a long handled loo brush which was liberally deployed in cleaning

I considered getting a new cassette as the bottle of blue ran out and I didn't like the look of the ingredients - the van is 30 years old so the cassette probably would always have had blue (and maybe pink) in it, so I had a go soaking it filled to the brim for a week with a bicarb solution and then going at it again with the loo brush - which was actually really good. I haven't used the van bathroom for almost a year but added some bio washing powder and water to the cassette, which still has no noticeable smell.

I believe vinegar is very good for wiping down, but then so is a daily go with a regular cleaning sponge and plenty of water. Education is also a wonderful thing - my lads either free pee, use exterior facilities or they sit down - I can't be dealing with "hey dad, I missed again"

One area to check is where the lid and seat are attached to the bowl, this gets dirty and isn't always easy to see or clean without removing seat and lid to do so.

A fine endorsement of my post 7 🤗🤗🤗

A dilute spray of Zoflora can deal with the whiff

Another one here for Zoflora!
We also have a sog it’s my first van with one and I don’t think I could have a van without one (but I don’t think it cures all smells)

Perhaps have a good disinfectant of the surrounding floor every day as well. As van is new to you, could there be embedded bacteria in the floor area which the hot weather has activated?

Get the freshen up kit. It's worth it to have a spare cassette and I noticed the toilet seat I removed when changing mine was quite discoloured and smelly in spite of having been cleaned multiple times, almost seems as if it gets absorbed into the plastic.

We normally use the 40 shot blue toilet chemical but on a recent trip we ran out of it so purchased some Elson Organic green fluid and it's the first time in years that the toilet stank.
Have just ordered some more of the 40 shot from eBay £10.99.

We use Aldi Bio clothes washing liquid-just a capful, and I have a spray bottle with a weak solution af Zoflora and water which gets used if needed.
I also use a spray bottle if white Vinegar and water to keep the bowl clear of scale as scale keeps hold of the urine which causes the small!
We also have a SOG fitted!
