Rear O/S leaf spring on 2016 Elddis 175 snapped, anybody else had same misfortune ?

No nowhere near there sea, live 50 miles from nearest coast, it's parked on gravel from day 1.

Is the nearside spring as badly corroded?

The springs either break at the eye or next to the axle,it’s not unusual.
In saying that vans usually break springs more often when they are empty
than when they are under load, because they bounce around more, and ride
better under load. Motorhomes are mostly carrying the same weight,so
don’t tend to suffer breakages so often.

you may have to change both as the new one will be stronger than the old one and put pressure on it and it will ping. Springs do go 'its just one of those things' I would have thought it should have been picked up at MOT stage as wearing so you would have been prepared

Way too much corrosion on the spring, added to pothole Britain’s roads and there we go.

I know the answers most probably no, but do you run overweight at all, as everything loaded into the rear, is sitting and swinging on that rear shackle.

Dont forget to change in pairs and try to push for new and not refurbished ones, that’ll have already don’t 10’s of 1000’s of miles 👍🏻

Definitely have to be changed in pairs, no doubt about it

Was it a second hand van, or from new. If second hand then may well have been in either salty water, or near the coast.

Also, the van may have been stored by the sea, or transported in sea spray. Remember rows and rows of Ford Cortina’s lined up at Liverpool docks. All covered in salt, seagull crap and dust. Quick wash and valet to make em shiny again, but inherently going to corrode early.

Think I’d have a good look at all other areas, front cross member etc, just for peace of mind.

IMHO Looks like a poor design on the helper spring (the one underneath) which looks like its end touches the curve of the main spring which is likely to be putting too much pressure on that point. The rust looks like its been broken for some time. Could be a manufacturing defect on the main spring also.

There is no real way of assessing "wear" on a spring
some last forever others will snap in early age
,as said, it is just "one of those things that cannot be predicted"
change the pair , or have a single leaf fitted to repair the original spring
just google vehicle leaf spring repairers

As people are saying change both springs. Springs can go at any time with or without corrosion. It can depend on the spring itself, road conditions, driving styles etc. A couple of months ago I changed the springs on a motorhome that had done less than 1000 miles and they both snapped at the same time.

What base vehicle is it ?

Our 2014 Ford Transit is pristine underneath, it had good anti-corrosion covering from new and has had 3 coverings of waxoyl since new. Done 50,000 miles.

Withy the greatest politeness, most of the above posts are wrong.
They talk about rust. Absolutely zero chance of the leaf springs 'rusting through' The whole van could have sat in the Atlantic for 100 years. Surface corrosion, yes But rusting through? Not a chance in a million It will be a stress fracture of some sort.

Back in the days when we had 'real' winters in Scotland you could find the roads being gritted anytime from late September to early May. Used car dealers often went south of the border for stock such was the rust problem. :(

Pretty common as they keep Jones springs in business making upgraded replacements.

My 2010 Eldiss - same chassis I think seems OK so far. 38,000 miles.

Saw lots of people in Morocco having new springs or a new leaf to replace a snapped one. The local garages can fix virtually anything, fast and cheap.. Amazing.
