I've just had this email from someone called Mellissa, I won't share her email address. Not sure whether to believe it or not. Have you heard anything?

Hi there! I have a very important message to share with Motorhomers, I hope you can pass this on. This morning, just before 8am in Puerto de Mazarron, in a popular overnight parking spot (behind Lidl), I awoke to an explosion. I was shocked to see on the road just next to me, a motorhome in flames. Even more disturbing is how it happened. A mattress had been placed underneath and set alight. The woman was lucky to escape, but her husband died in the explosion. I would just like to highlight to people that just because a parking spot might be posted on a website and frequented by many other motorhomes, does not necessarily mean it’s safe. Just around the corner from this spot is an extremely rough neighbourhood, and the town itself does not have the safest vibe about it. I’m sickened by this deliberate attack on an innocent Finnish couple and just want to warn others to stay vigilant and safe, and make sure to have fire extinguishers. Regards, Melissa

Hope it’s not true, frightening :Eeek:

Not a very good rate on camper contact .
Check out the 3rd "Brit"review don't think I have or would stop there .

Searched fire, explosion, death, motorhome in various combinations and nothing. Sounds like it’s one of the things that gets passed around FB.
Possibly passed on to you in all good faith but no evidence so far to support it.

Unfortunately. the solitary life of full timing can attract people who have mental problems. I was befriended by a guy who appeared to come from a wealthy family, but he had severe social problems. He lives in a large converted vehicle with a dog, and he appears normal, except that he is completely egocentric. Sometimes he would flip, and the dog would hide under the steering wheel, and I used to ignore him for a few minutes until he returned to normal. I thought that I might be able to help him, but I have given up when the last even almost ended in a physical fight, and he was shouting abuse. I avoid him now. I mention this because he has photos of a campervan he owned that was completely gutted by fire. I think he said he paid £80,000 for it. I suspect that he flipped out with the wrong person, and they torched his van.

It sounds that the people involved may have upset somrone for some reason, and the attach was aimed at a specific person rather than campervans in general. I've got wooden flooring over my chassis, so I'm not sure how I can add decent fire retardant to it.

Well done Sandra (y)

You'll need to be an expert to know if it was a deliberate act of a mattress under the van, the story reads like it was inside.

Didn’t think to try Spanish. Translation
A dead man in the fire declared in a caravan in Puerto de Mazarrón

12/20/2019
The Emergency Coordination Center 112 has received a dozen calls from 07: 54h. informing of the fire declared in a caravan located in the Urbanization Los Caleñares in Puerto de Mazarrón

The callers indicate that a mattress is burning inside the caravan, located just behind the Miguel Delibes School, and they inform about the person inside it.

They report explosions in the caravan.

The following troops are mobilized to the place of the fire:
Mazarrón local police.
Firefighters of the Firefighting and Rescue Consortium of the Region of Murcia belonging to the park of Mazarrón (3 firefighters and extinguishing truck).
Two ambulances of the Department of Emergency and Sanitary Emergencies 061 (a Mobile Emergency Unit and an ambulance assistance).
Local police report that the woman has been able to leave the caravan.

Toilets care for the woman who presents 3rd burns. degree on both feet.

Health workers move the woman to the burn unit of the Virgen de la Arrixaca University General Hospital.

Emergency services confirm the death of the man, 70 years of age and Finnish nationality.

However it happened, very sad for the couple involved.

Just from looking at the pics posted and with 15years experience as a firefighter , it doesn't look like the seat of the fire was beneath the vehicle . Thats a first opinion it would need a closer detailed examination to be certain . I dont know if other ex firefighters on here would agree ?

As an ex-SOCO and fire investigation-trained, I'd certainly agree with you from that photograph. Nothing to suggest seat is below chassis/hab floor level (y)

More reading here.

The woman is 36yrs old, perhaps his daughter. Looks like theres nothing left of the other side.

Bizarre translation of the last paragraph .....
"The toilets have not been able to save the life of the man inside, whose personal data are unknown. "

This incident would seem to be some distance from 'The Rocks' car park at Bolnuevo.

Having said that, I don't think it's beyond the bounds of possibility that the Authorities
will use this incident as a reason to become more hardline in their approach to "Autocaravanas"

From memory, there are houses to to the Left Side (when looking out to sea) of the Car Park at Bolnuevo.
I can imagine the GC turning any 'van parked up hard against those houses.

Yes, it reads mattress on fire IN the Motorhome ..... no where does it state it was deliberate.

‘typical Facebook fake news...?

terrible for the occupants..

"The callers indicate that a mattress is burning inside the caravan, located just behind the Miguel Delibes School, and they inform about the person inside it. "

See a person inside through a window, OK, but how would callers see a mattress on fire inside the MH unless their viewpoint is on a higher level? You wouldn't expect them to stand close to a vehicle on fire. With gas bottles.

Modern mattresses such as those fitted by Adria are also supposed to be fire retardent. An old mattress placed underneath ... likely to be more combustible. Can't rule that out yet.

There's usually more to the story than you find in the local newspaper.
