Swift Kon Tiki Tag, 2007.

Newbie
Went to Wales for a few days, first good run out in Swift Kon-Tiki tag since September.

Two hours in felt clutch slipping on longish incline. Seemed to sort itself out, journey to that point had been mainly motorway and dual carriageway.

Return journey 4 days later decided to drive across mid wales home, rather than the longer Motorway/Dual carriageway route.

120 miles up and down hills, bends, islands etc, never missed a beat. So literally slipped for 2-3 minutes on mainly flat route.

Appreciate that it is not a job whereby you can strip it down and 'take a look' so only options seem to be, have a new one fitted (£860) or use it and take the risk of breaking it down and need recovering (UK).

is there a third option worth considering?

Thanks

Steve

In gear handbrake on release the clutch slowly if it stalls clutch good if it doesn't your 800 quid worse off although that seems a bit expensive for a new clutch

Thanks, will give it a try. Had two quoted from local garages, both within £30 of each other.

Be careful when you try it years ago i worked with a cocky pillock who knew nothing about cars but his brother owned the garage and he was trying to impress a customer with his knowledge but didnt look so clever when the car shot forward into the reception wall, oh how I laughed

Sometimes if you ride the clutch it can polish the clutch plate. This can but not always sort it’s self out by keeping your left foot off the clutch pedal. Don’t ask how I know☹️☹️😡

How do you know this stuff?

I did it when I first drove my BiL F88 Volvo lorry I polished it he drove it and got rid of the shine.🙄

A rough guide is clutch bite height, if the clutch starts to bite with the pedal low to the floor it generally means the clutch has a decent amount of life left,
If the clutch come to the top of the pedal travel before biting it means getting your cheque book out,

3rd gear - try and pull away from standing - if you can without stalling clutch has probably gone.

You needto do it with handbrake on & in 4th gear & attempt to pull away .. If it stalls all is good
All assuming the handbrake works efficiently if its a Fiat! Most don't.

Maybe dual clutch which usually includes a new flywheel.
Or, do away with the dual clutch and fit a standard clutch and flywheel.

2nd gear going up on a medium incline. Decelerate until you're just about at the bottom of the power band, then floor the accelerator. If it pulls away without slipping its ok; if it slips it needs changing. Much kinder test than the "drop the clutch from a standstill" types and a truer test than slipping the clutch trying to pull away in 3rd or higher.
