Just planning a route and was wondering if Saint Nazaire on the Atlantic coast is worth visiting?
We're heading down from the northern coast of France and pondering a stop there or heading straight on to Noirmoutier before heading down the Vendee coast to Ille de Re.
I was initially interested in seeing the WW2 Submarine bases there but if that's all it has to offer, it won't go down well with all aboard!
(We'd be staying on Aires.)
Any thoughts from those who've been?
Thanks

There's a shipyard there where they build those enormous cruise ships, and a big bridge!! That's about it. We went because all six in the party over 60 and interested in the submarine pens...and they were interesting.
It does depend on the time you have, the detour if any and the make up of your party.

From Yorkshire, I may be wrong but at Elvington they have a massive bomb made to smash those but I think it failed. I've never seen anything like this bomb, the thickness of the metal would support the Humber bridge.

Yes ! See it before all the Sub pens are turned into commercial enterprises. just across the lock is a French submarine you can go in and well worth the visit. Good parking nearby too.

In the same complex as the submarine pens is the 'Normandie Dock' the target of Operation Chariot in WW2

The area to the west of St Nazaire is worth an extended stay on it's own, the Presqu'ile de Guerande.

The walled Medieval town of Guerande

The superb crescent beach of La Baule, Pornichet and Le Pouliguen.

Cote Sauvage, rocky inlets with excellent beaches, picturesque coastal towns of Le Croisic, Batz sur Mer,La Turballe, Piriac sur Mer, Mesquer/Quimiac.

Aires and campsites a plenty and not too busy out of the French holiday season.

We have a static caravan in the region.

I went last year to see the u-boat pens. Only planned on staying a day or two. Stayed for 4. There is also a tour around the Airbus factory where they make the fuselages. (In French only and you must book a couple of days in advance). There is also a museum (in French only) of boat building (Ocean Liners mainly) and airplanes. The tickets can be bought from the office opposite the tourist information office.

One of the u-boat pens has been converted into a mock Ocean Liner.

Opposite the sub pens & Tourism Office is a large supermarket. Next that the Theatre and a car park where you can park your van for free. Next to the carpark is the aire approx €7 per night including EHU. The town is good for shopping and people watching.

Keep an eye out for the large paintings of Tintin on the walls of buildings.
