Is it us?

This evening we have enjoyed a lovely piece of duck. SHMBO used lots of garlic. We both agree that garlic is not what it used to be, could hardly taste it. Recently we have found the same with parmesan cheese.

Maybe our aged taste buds are knackered or the ingredients are not what they used to be.

I would appreciate general feedback on this.
I love duck. I love garlic. But I would not have them together. The garlic would drown the taste of the duck for me.

Another fan of chillies and hot food, I just love Thai food I’m going to miss it so much when we head home. Although I do love a traditional Sunday Carvery. Local restaurant to us here in Thailand does a great offering, getting a table is the hard part.

It’s not surprising that our ‘fresh’ foods seem tasteless a lot of Spain, where a lot of it comes from, is like this-

Foods don’t see the sun anymore and the soil must be exhausted, man made fertiliser doesn’t have the natural ingredients.
Re. Garlic, don’t store it in the fridge that will lose its punch quicker than anything.

Garlic is just about the easiest stuff there is to grow your own , just get a root split it into cloves , shove it in some soil and it will grow, nothing else to do but pull it up when it's grown.
Once had a brother in law, dead now rip, but he wouldnt touch that foreign muck , his words, including garlic, we went on an all inclusive holiday to France or Spain, can't remember which, and at dinner at night they used to bring out baskets of bread and he was eating loads of it and kept saying how good this bread tastes , no one had the heart to tell him it was garlic bread and he never did find out but went back to hating foreign muck when we came home.

i eat the garlic raw . tastes better. Another way to tell decent garlic is to peel on tooth slit open & remove the seed. when you put it in your mouth if you can chew it it isn't strong. It should blister the inside of your mouth a decent clove. Often I just have to swallow it to stop burning.

they use the plastic tents so that they can maintain the temps in autmn/winter .Up here the plastic tents have giant lpg heaters in
and the soil must be exhausted,
No the complete opposite. The soil will support nothing. They started by planting tomatoes in grow bags & watering .
When done it was all ploughed in & more grow bags used for the next lot. Rinse & repeat. This over time eventually made the soil reasonably fertile but around here tomatoes are always grown in grow bags inside the tents. Rarely will you see them directly in the ground. We also have peaches & other soft fruits that need huge amounts of water inside the polytunnels

Best garlic is from the Isle of Wight.
IOW was always well known for its garlic and sweetcorn, hardly ever see it in the shops now.

When we visit the kids they always take us to the The Royal Oak in Bangkok for a Sunday roast, last thing I want when in Thailand but I'm not really a fan of roasts.

The robin hood tavern in pattaya is better than a lot of English pubs in the uk.

My OH had acid reflux. Bad enough that on occasions her food got stuck and she choked. Not long enough to effect a heimlich manoeuvre but several scary (for her mostly), seconds. Prescribed meds after an endoscopy and it reduces stomach acidity which let the esophageal swelling calm down. Might work for you as well. Hth
thanks have been on medication for some time, still have problems if I eat certain stuff, had a nice salad last night, but really suffered not sure whether it was the lettuce, cucumber or both. would be great if cutting so much out helped me lose weight 🤣

I went to a kinesiologist about 15yrs ago. She decided I had too much wholegrain in my system, which was the cause of my acid reflux, she said. She tested me against peppers, grains, grasses and other things before giving me a list of ingredients I shouldn't eat for 6 weeks.

So, bread was out totally, as were things which contained wheat or yeast. Sugar was totally off limit too. And all drinks except whisk(e)y, gin or vodka. Neat, no mixer. Coffee was off limits too.

I wasn't hungry for those 6 weeks. If I were peckish, I'd eat a crispbread with a tasty topping. Or eat cold tasty leftovers specifically there for snacking.

Lost over a stone in those six weeks. Acid reflux gone too and bloated stomach was gone in about 3 days, from when tying shoes laces became as easy again, as when I was a teenager.

I should probably do it again just to shed a little weight.

@ TheMobileWanderer I do only eat wholegrain, but not much, and did a trial of no wheat products which didn't seem to make a difference, interesting you mention sugar, i have a very sweet tooth and probably. No make that certainly eat far too much so will be cutting that down by quite a bit, need to do it grdually, cold turkey will make me even grumpier than i am in the mornings.

I remember a documentary many years ago. Even back then the crop growers were only interested in those vegetables that gave the best yield, size, uniformity, colour and pest resistance.
Flavour was the last thing they were interested in. That's why selective breeding of veggies has resulted in the bland/tasteless products we have today.

Same with everything these days.
I used to work in a flour mill and the product we produced was to make bread be able to be made by anybody (supermarket bakers), not to be able to tell a good loaf from a bad one.
We had a test lab and they baked bread all day and then offered to us the workers. Some loafs would be completely hollow. But look identical outside. That way it would always sell. And you wouldn’t believe the amount of chemicals that were put into the products.

Same with beer (and probably wine too).
Back in 1981 I was working on a boiler at a local Brewery. It was a hot day and I asked the boilerman if we could have a drink of something.
He thrust a glass in my hand and poured from a jug a lovely golden liquid. When I drank it, the explosion of flavours on my taste buds was fantastic. Everything you'd hope a good ale would taste of - but never does.
He explained that I was getting it fresh from the vat, before it went off to have the numerous chemicals added to give it colour, a head, preserve it, help it to travel etc.
That is why pub beers rarely taste as good as you had hoped. The chemicals just destroy the flavour.

It's your age I'm afraid, just use more of but don't invite people for dinner.

It turned out that when I stopped wholegrain bread, which I thought was good for me (we're all different, literally, what's good for one isn't for another), my ballooned stomach shrunk in just days and the acidity was gone too. I switched to a sugar substitute temporarily and it was so sweet, I used much less than real sugar. Then, when I started using sugar again, later, I used those smaller quantities.
I use cane sugar now, specifically not having been aware of the differences beforehand. As for Granary bread, which I really like, it's easily consumed without reflux now (as if I had overdosed on wholegrain before) and sourdough is my preference for white bread with fewer, if any, preservatives.
I can be a grumpy git too - Not just mornings!! lol
