I can remember when we camped in the 70s in Cornwall and as we crossed the moors it was a big thing for my parents to snip off a bit of Heather and tie it to the front grill on the car. After that we proudly wore it like it was a trophy of where we had been for many weeks.

Is it still a thing today and does anyone know where this came from ? Please tell me it involved pirates or knights as I want to wind the children up 😆

It was supposed to bring luck for the traveller bit like the scallop shell for the pilgrims or you could tell the children it was a talisman to ward off evil spirits that inhabit the moors about 10 feet off the footpaths!

Thank you for that memory jerker.

My mum always did the same, Devon heather though, and as we didn't have car at first mum would tie it to her handbag.

Once we had a carthen some would be fixed to the radiator grill and flower pots full would be collected to take back to London.

I believe it all revolved around 'Gypsy Curses.'

Not quite the same but a while ago I did see a fairly recent looking dead pheasant dangling on the front grille of someones car in a car park. I suspect they thought they'd hit it and left it on the road. If it was there a couple of days later I think it wouldn't have been good luck when the smell started.
I do remember the heather thing but it's pretty much frowned on now to pick anything wild.

Good Evans! I’d forgotten about that,no idea where it comes from. People also had nodding dogs on the back parcel shelf, didn’t they! And what about “Kevin and Tracy” stickers on the windscreen, they were very sad!

We have pampas grass at the front of our house, apparently it suggested some sort of 'leisure activity ' a few years ago ...

You've to hang it for a few weeks before you cook it .

I remember the gypsy women coming to the door with sprigs of heather and pegs, if you didn’t buy anything they would mutter a curse at you.
Aye times have changed.

Now they come with 3 topless chavs and a lorry load of tar 😁

I can remember my mum telling me to be quiet when the gypsies knocked on the door. All good until i tripped over the metal
dog bowl. She had to buy some pegs.
I got a clip round the ear ole

Still see it on some Transit Pick Ups.
You know, the ones with the high sided bodies.

I once had a summer holiday job selling Corona in Bournemouth (now you can't give it away 😄) in the 60's.

I muttered similar curses if you didn't buy any anything off me too! 😄😄
