Don't own one yet
I was wondering if it is worth the hassle? I keep getting mixed messages. Would like to hear from someone with actual experience in this.

I have friends that did it and had so much damage to repair that in the end they lost money and had to sell the van

No,it isn’t. I’ve never done it,and never will, but I’ve read numerous threads on here on the same subject that lead me to this conclusion. Don’t do it.

A friend of ours hired a motorhome a few of times as a tow vehicle and accommodation when we were racing at Brands Hatch, Goodwood and Angouleme and every time he took it back with damage.
Nothing big, a wing mirror one time, a locker handle another and he would not tell me on the other one, but it was down to them not being used to motorhomes.
Although only small mishaps, each probable kept that van off hire waiting for part for a week or two, and if you only have the one van you hire then your soon out of business.

I’ve hired a couple of motorhomes and each time something broke, fridge catch on the first and Shower Tampa door which was stuck on the 2nd. I was very upset on both occasions and paid for repairs but in each occasion it was my lack of experience of vans. I consider myself a careful person, I would be horrified letting some people into any van when you consider the throw away careless culture now.

Thank you for taking the time to reply. It never even crossed my mind about people mistreating it. I don't know how.... I think I live in a bubble! And of course salesmen never mentioned it either. It's been disappointing but most helpful.

I've never been involved in hiring, I did used to moor my narrowboat at a boatyard in Staffordshire that had a hire fleet, the state I saw some of those boats come back after a couple of weeks I'd give it a wide berth.

Reminds me of a day boat someone hired that come past us once when I was on my mates narrowboat. Those in the know of boating etiquette realise it’s on idle when passing moored boats and passing others.

Not this chap, you could hear the engine scream and see his bow wave from miles away. I swear you could have water ski off it. 😂

As he came down the canal with a beer and his mates having a great time, all you could see in his wake was carnage.

Not for me this hiring lark.

I've let friends borrow mine a couple of times with no issues. these are very good friends who I know and trust. look at how the folk in the hired one next to you treat it when you're out and about. you will never even consider it again, our casual, selfish attitudes cause chaos everywhere
