Where are the laybyes? We drove some of the WAW a couple of years ago and were surprised at the lack of simple laybyes. Lots of solid yellow lines and room for emergency stop but very few places to pull over for a break. We resorted to stopping in supermarket car parks.

The WAW has lots of viewing point carparks, marked by their own sign, WAW spelt vertically. We stayed overnight on several of those - not sure if it's "allowed" or not but nobody bothered us.

Get a big umbrella and some good waterproof gear.

Actually Ireland is great in a Motorhome, wild camping accepted virtually anywhere, people very friendly, when you drive through villages you have to wind the window down and say hello to everyone.
Water very easy to get, taps on all the fishermen's piers, getting rid of rubbish can be a bit of a challenge. Food & eating out very expensive.
Interested to read this. Weā€™ve just started researching for our Motorhoming holiday in Southern Ireland, and there were lots of negative views especially on the question of wild camping. However, it sounds as though youā€™ve had a much better experience.

Was a few years ago about 10 years ago but I don't think it's changed that much. Plenty of out of the way places where no one lives.

We also fancied Ireland for a change, until I realised that none of the ferry companies lets you take your dog into the main areas of the boat (unless its small enough to put in a pet carrier-mine is not.) Our rescue dog is terrified when left alone in the car or anywhere near a cage-so looks like there is no way we can get there-unless we get a Brittany Ferries dog friendly cabin to France and then same from France to Ireland-and back-would be somewhat expensive I think!

Weā€™ve now changed our minds about Ireland. It seemed such a faff of testing and form filling, when all we want is a relaxing holiday. We also have a very elderly cat (22) who will have to stay in a cattery, so itā€™s a Yorkshire tour instead, so we can get back quickly if the fur baby needs us.

I went in October and didn't do any of that. If you go UK/UK it's a lot less hassle so you need either liverpool - belfast or Cairnryan - Belfast/Larne

Being a native, come on over! šŸ™‚ Wee tip for you if you haven't already booked travel here via Stranraer to Larne or Belfast once you have experienced some of the North, Titanic Belfast, Giants Causeway, Glen's of Antrim coast road etc just nip over the border anywhere not much covid checking stuff over here, just bring a mask for your shopping and you have to visit Donegal (but I would say that! šŸ˜€)
We're doing the same in late April & all of May, exactly as you've mentioned!

Apologies if I have missed it but does visiting Ireland, rather than Northern Ireland, count towards your 90 days?

We travelled via Belfast (it's closest for us anyway) and overnighted before travelling on. There is a proper service bourne at Carrickfergus Castle and staying there is no problem (the boy racers disappear after 11.00pm).
On our first trip we travelled north around the Causeway coast before entering the Republic near Londonderry; no checks or formalities but I should point out that according to the Irish Gov website there is no restriction on dogs crossing from NI into Eire and we weren't checked.
On our second trip we overnighted at Enniskillen before crossing into Eire, again with no restrictions or formalities. (Link to Blog in signature).

Technically time in Eire counts as part of the 90 days in Europe rule but as we weren't checked either in or out I don't know how it would be enforced.

When we return in May it is our intention to get an Irish passport for the dog to bypass problems in any future travel to EU.

And when you go to Co Donegal, get the dog an EU pet passport. No AHC needed to get to NI at present (check before you travel) and then cross the border and visit an Irish vet.
Hi. We're planning to visit Ireland instead of Southern Europe this year - and were thinking of doing this!!
Can you get a EU pet passport without having a residence in the Republic?
That's great advice, thanks

Yes you can. Be aware though if you are planning on doing this the vet will want records of your animals vaccinations so far. So, you will need your dogs old UK pet passport. However if you never had one or don't have one you will need an AHC

Had no problem with a four week trip Cairnryan to Belfast in May with Stena - even used up some of our Tesco vouchers.
(Except of course I forgot to book the dog and had to go back and amend the booking - twice, out and return. Stupid.)
