What books do you find invaluable when travelling and use between trips?
Maintenance, tourism, sites etc?

DK tourist guides for the area being explored. Colourful and inspirational.
Or use the interweb and save a bit of space/weight.

Have one small book on France that we love apart from that we do all our research online. Not much point in books when you can get up to date info online.

Aug 09 to date 9,000 miles!
An ancient 'Rough Guide' to France - tells you all sorts of things about areas generally and what 'attractions' happen to be there. Being an old book, it doesn't list eg water parks - more on natural and historic things, which suits us. (c. 1970 ish I think)

When we bought our motorhome we found Haynes Motorcaravan Manual to be almost invaluable as it explains how everything works. Much more useful than the sketchy information given in the Owners Manual.

It is so difficult to produce a specific manual these days, because there are so many variants.
Manufacturers could put a bit more effort into it, though. Mine even contains errors.

Turns out the 1984 Annual is the thirtieth anniversary edition selling for $15 in America. Christmas just round the corner , but my good lady might not like my letter to Santa:). Luckily I can live in the van for a few days if push comes to shove.

Flower book, bird book, fungi book - and DK guides, ACSI, France Passion. I also always take one proper paper book for reading, though I use Kindle mostly. On the last trip it was a book about the history of the Mediterranean - The Middle Sea by John Julius Norwich. :)

We fortunately have very cheap internet access so can do a lot online - mainly for finding Aires/Stellplatz etc., and info on places of interest in areas. We have All the Aires France( 4th Edition) and well out-of date and incomplete even when new, so we use campingcar-infos, camper contact, searchforsites and I may soon sign up for park4night.

However, I do like to have paper maps - we have Michelin France and some older Michelin largescale local sheets for several areas kindly donated by a member on MHFacts. These are good for see other features in an area which do not show well on even satellite etc.

I have for sometime carried the two-part Shorter Oxford Dictionary and the Times World Atlas, but we do not get them out often, so I may leave those at home in future to save some weight(maybe 4-5 kilos between them)
