We are going to Belgium and France in May for three weeks.
My sister who works in a post office has told me that perhaps l should buy this permit as there are lots of drivers doing so at present.
For the price of £5-50p it will hardly break the bank but l am tempted to live dangerously and sod B#$X#*.
Any thoughts would be appreciated thanks.
Norman.

Why would you need one?

I stand to be corrected but if we leave with no deal you will need one for each country you visit to be legal within that country.

We bought one just to be safe and save hassle if stopped by a stroppy gendarme.
We left UK end of Feb and didn’t expect to be home until well after 29th March.
As you say, £5.50 isn’t going to break the bank but at the rate br***t is (not) happening you probably won’t need it.

Richard.

Two types, both covers different European Countries to each other (y)

The same one covers Belgium and France.

  • 1949 IDP: If you are travelling to Ireland, Malta, Spain or Cyprus, you may require a 1949 IDP. The 1949 convention IDP is valid for 12 months.
  • 1968 IDP: If you are travelling to all other EU states, you may require a 1968 IDP. The 1968 convention IDP is valid for three years, or for however long your driving licence is valid, if that date is earlier.
  • 1926 IDP: A 1926 IDP is not required in any EU state. However, it is required it if you plan to drive in Mexico or Somalia. You may need a 1926 IDP to drive in Liechtenstein if there is no EU Exit deal
Above advice copied from RAC website.

We have obtained #1968 as we live in France during most of the summer and have no idea what happens next with Brexit. I can imagine EU police being very vigilant if we leave with no deal while we are over there. £5.50 for peace of mind.

But all the other EU places have the same driving licences as us don't they?
Think about it. .. If we are out our licence will no longer be a European approved licence as we will no longer be a member of the EU.
Hence, the International Driving Permit and insurance green card.
Your next licence will not include the EU ring of stars or the words European Union.
Your next passport will look different to your current one too.

You need a third one to visit Lichenstein,,BUSBY:D2

I have left it late for getting an IDP but think I better had! We set off on Wednesday.

Has anyone got an IDP for someone else? Do they need to sign it at the post office or can they be taken away and signed at home. I know the website did say you could get them for other people!

Glad I'm going to Ireland :moon2: :rofl::rofl:

My interpretation is that any licence issued in an EU State is valid in any other EU State.

Therefore since UK is, up until now an EU State, then any current licences were issued as such with issue dates accordingly and are valid up to their expiry.

Licences issued after UK ceases to be a EU State may not be valid without an agreement to accept them.

The situation with other European licences being accepted in UK after Brexit is up to the UK Government's decision, but I doubt they will want to rock the boat.

Can you get to a post office tomorrow. Just take your driving licence and a passport photo? They do it while you wait.

Just to add... a bit weird.

We went to the post office on the Isle of Man the other say to enquire about this. Here it costs £11 and there is only one that is issued.

After tonight’s Groundhog Day shambles I think we’ll be getting one :( ...

Yes you will.

But,why do you have to have one for every country and not an EU one that does them all?

Another money making load of crap if you ask me!

By the way, is there a separate one for “Benidorm”?:)

Post #11 by @maison states which countries require which version of the IDP.

Well I have got one for France and Spain, both in the EU, so why do we need one for each of these if both in the Eu.All about extracting
money.

Because the Treaties which cover this long pre-date the existence of the EU.

It is just that EU counties agreed to accept each others licences and not require IDPs.

Outside the EU the Treaty rules apply.

The UK government have declared that they will accept all EU country licences without an IDP. Now it just needs the other 27 EU countries to reciprocate and the problem goes away. I expect they will when the mist clears.

Well after a bit of a carry on we each have our IDP! Hubbys photo wasn’t good enough!!

Rest assured after we have rushed to do this the whole Brexit possibility will be delayed/cancelled !

The GOV.com web site tells you that you need a IDP if we are out of the EU, (which should have been on the 29th), ditto a Green Card. I was surprised at the news report the other day when the motorhome couple came back from Europe as they didn't know where they stood with driving, pets etc - the implications of what you should do have been aired quite a bit.
