Hey forum, quick question: I have seen on some youtube videos people putting in what appears to be a rubber layer on the inside of the van panel before fitting the final interior layer on top of the rubber layer.

Can someone advise me what the purpose of doing this is please? I am guessing that rubber will add a lot of extra weight and I am wondering what the reasons could be for doing so? Surely it cannot be for insulation? If it is for insulation purposes there are almost certainly better options...

Is it for sound deadening? Surely this is not a serious factor if so?

Im a bit baffled...

Thanks

It serves two purposes. It is sound deadening/damping and also insulation. It can if installed correctly also act as a vapour barrier.

Sound deadening layer , you can get it as a separate layer or combined with insulation.
Plenty of different products available and yes I would say definitely worth doing.
Our off manufacturer van conversion sounds like an old tin hut when you shut doors , also plenty of road noise, one look behind the panels and the insulation is a complete joke ⚠️

Is sound deadening really that much of an issue? Ive never owned a motorhome so wouldn't know.

And does the rubber layer really make that much difference? Surely expanding foam insulation would make for better insulation and sound deading as well as superior moisture barrier?

I never seen this rubber layer you talk about. I have used neoprene close cell sound and thermal matt. Look at dodo mat and you will see what I mean. It’s the most crucial layer combined with the insulation and vapour barrier. Rubber it’s to dense for any sound or thermal benefit.
