Interesting reading for doggy owners

This monster rides in her crate secured on the back seat.
She actually loves going out in the car and will sprint for the door when allowed!

Our dogs have always been restrained either in the boot or rear seat.

I would never have a dog unrestrained or on the front seat - far too much or a risk to the dog and the car occupants.

I do like the 2+2=5 type of journalism. Any fines for careless driving are down to the manner of driving, which has to fall short of the careful and competent test. If the careless driving is a result of some distraction, which may be a dog/cat/parrot/sheep or whatever, it is no different to being distracted by the ASDA shopping falling over on the back seat!

Meaning of careless, or inconsiderate, driving

(1)This section has effect for the purposes of sections 2B and 3 above and section 3A below.

(2)A person is to be regarded as driving without due care and attention if (and only if) the way he drives falls below what would be expected of a competent and careful driver.

(3)In determining for the purposes of subsection (2) above what would be expected of a careful and competent driver in a particular case, regard shall be had not only to the circumstances of which he could be expected to be aware but also to any circumstances shown to have been within the knowledge of the accused.

(4)A person is to be regarded as driving without reasonable consideration for other persons only if those persons are inconvenienced by his driving.]

So if you have a lively dog that is likely to be bounding all over the car it may fit this test, but an old boy asleep on the back seat is unlikely to fit the bill.
Whilst common sense suggests the dog be protected against being injured or injuring another, it does not automatically follow that an unrestrained dog creates an offence.

Perhaps a freedom of information request to police forces asking about the number of relevant prosecutions may reveal just how rampant the problem is! I doubt I would need many fingers to count them.

I’ve stopped and chatted to various police persons with my dog just sat in the passenger seat. Never been mentioned.

Our old girl is happy in her bed in the passenger footwell or behind the passenger seat. Don’t think she would be flying far!

I havent even got a dog (at the moment), why am I clicking on this thread!!

Thank goodness I have never heard of somebody being fined for a dog being 'unrestrained' in a car.

Our two dogs lay on the rear floor and will continue to do so.

I am absolutely amazed that "60% of people think unrestrained dogs are dangerous in vehicles". Perhaps the same poor people who obviously have nothing else to worry about also strap in shopping, handbags and briefcases.

Our latest muttly flops down between the front seats if we put his harness on him in the motorhome. I have a short lead that is secured to the seat base.
Of all the dogs we have had this one is the best for travelling. He dozes off with the air vent blowing on his head. The others were never happy being secured when travelling.
