I've approached NFU Chichester for an insurance quote for a new Carthago. An acceptable quote except for the following:
1. They require a tracker.....i didn't think they required this but the guy was fairly adamant. (I will be having one fitted anyway)
2. They want to know which company will fit the solar panels (I declared this as being added later along with a refillable LPG tank). I said I was fitting them myself. Ah, he came back, could we have an engineers report to say that they have been fitted correctly and securely. And it would generate a premium increase.

I thought Chichester were experienced in insuring motorhomes. Maybe they don't want the business. But the quote was similar to my existing motorhome insurance. So I'll continue looking!

AGEAS have just given me a great quote, less than half normal.👍
I went with Ageas one year, van got hit in a campsite. The offender admitted liability but it took 18 months to resolve, had to constantly chase Ageas. Not likely to ever use them again.

After seeing the way accessories fitted to some vans are you can understand why they want an engineers report.
One Funster picked up his van and by the time he got home the solar panel had gone, fancy seeing that flying at you😳😳

Thanks for the info - might be an idea to write it up in the review section

The concern raised by some insurance companies is to the competence of the person fitting the extras. Since 2008 I have had to remove and re install panels fitted by owners three times, in one case the customer phoned and said could I come to the campsite he was staying at as he was getting no charge from his two panels he had fitted prior to driving from up north to Devon, the site gave him my number, on inspection one panel was missing and the other one jammed against his roof box? He had glued the feet using Evostick contact adhesive. It only would only have taken that panel to have flown into or caused a vehicle to swerve to have caused a serious accident.

Re the tracker, that requirement is cropping up more often with NFU now, I thin they changed about three years ago just as we were getting quoted for our van as the first quote they didn't require one but when we came to insure the quote had run out and the new one required the tracker. Re fitting of accessories, well I can't really blame them if they are accepting the risk the least they should do is ensure that everything was fitted competently.

That was me or it happened to me, my solar was probably fitted by the “engineer”

My motto is research and advice and do it yourself properly, too many stories of “professionals and dealers work” on here to make me wonder why anyone goes to a dealer….😎

Best not get the dealer or some experts near you van then 🤣

But NFU would probably have been ok if I had said that a dealer had fitted them. How many of us have a 100% trust in dealers?

If you want something done properly do it yourself….

As I found out on the last property I finished, paid very good money for someone to help out for a week..
Bed on 3 manhole covers, 5 months later drain blocks and I find out he never cleaned the manhole out plus all the bedding excess was left in the bottom of the manhole🤬🤬
His other job to lay porcelain paving around manholes, never primed them so they were loose🤬🤬

Why don't you ask the question of nfu as to why they would take at face value the fitting of anything by 'dealers' as being in any way acceptable without accreditaion?

Just worth looking out for vehicle recovery limitations with NFU - our house insurance is with them and we would have been very happy to insure MH with them too, but vehicle recovery was limited to 3500 kg. Most Carthagos are over that.

We have a good deal on insurance but you are right no recovery 😏

I was once refused a quote by Saga because the van had solar on the roof.
It would appear that same underwriter hasn't retired yet.

I was once declined insurance by LV because we have gas bottles 🙄🤷‍♂️

Renewal on my Elddis due 1st April. Saw NFU recommended on here somewhere. Renewal £329. NFU. Tracker must be fitted. £929. Yeah. They need to be good for that.
