Hi,

Who would you recommend for insurance for an American RV?

It must be fully comprehensive, cover ALL windows (especially windscreen) and I also want full UK breakdown recovery (either included with insurance or seperately).

In the past I have always used Budget Insurance (now part of Norwich union) and am interested to hear who others use...

Thanks ::bigsmile:

Hi Bryan

I am trying to put together a precis on RV insurance for the common use of all RV'ers.

I use the NFU but they do not have an inclusive breakdown scheme so I am also a member of the Caravan Club with their Green Flag Membership. (MayDay)

Others use the Caravan and Camping Club with their RAC Specialist Recovery policy - which I have had very good reports of.

My list of RV Insurers is <here> and I am currently trying to get all of them to tell me what they actually DO insure and cover breakdown-wise but it is very difficult to extract information from any of them!

I would love to have a copy of any of your correspondence for my 'Precis' if you would let me.

I'm a member of the C&CC, is the recovery service an extra? How much? What levels of recovery do the offer? (Roadside assitance? Recovery to home or site? Home start?)

Thanks

[For the 10 years we owned RV's, we were always with Safeguard.
Breakdown (Europe wide) , windscreen and 2k contents included.
We NEVER managed to beat thier renewals and both times we had to use the services (a breakdown in France) and an accident in Yorkshire, the service was A1, very quick and courteous with no messing about.
I might also add that was told by a senior member of thier organisation some months ago that they are WELL aware of the fulltiming issue and have, for quite sometime, been trying to get an underwriter to understand/accept the lifestyle and produce a workable policy FOR FULLTIMERS IN AMERICAN RV'S, unfortunately, so far, with no luck.

The C&CC is with the RAC Arrivals Scheme - yes it does cost extra but they are very prepared to low-load a broken RV rather than send a normal small breakdown truck prepared to tow a ten-ton RV!

Lots of details on the RV forum.

Hi Bryan

We used Safeguard this year because we needed the green card for Morocco. They also do the full breakdown thing as well.

Last year we used R J Specialists who were very good, much cheaper on price as well but they do not do the green card.

Give Geo a ring, he may have more info anyway.

See you soon

Hi Brains looking to insure an RV:winky: have you something to tell us???
Pammy was nearly right last year we were with RH specialist insurance not RJ
They do not do recovery over 3.5 ton:Doh:
For that we used the CCC Arrival scheme they do do any length and weight
make doubly sure re windscreen cover as there are limits to claims on some,
whilst your at it can you clarify weather a RV has one or two screens, it matters a great deal if you have say a £2000 max on any one claim, because a full screen is circa £4500:Eeek: and you may argue that the 2K limit per claim is ok if they allow two claims at once, ie two screens or one that is the question

Update

Thanks for all the pointers ::bigsmile:

At the moment, looking like Sureterm Insurance are going to win my business, beating Safeguard, Comfort, RH Classic and Adrian Flux...

Only NFU left and they are on answer phone

UPDATE:

Well we did go with Sureterm (Equity Red Star policy) initially...

BUT!

When we go the paperwork there was a clause that I was concerned about. It said that Windscreen cover was limited to £1000 'Where applicable'

So I rang to see if my policy was 'applicable' and it was. I explained that a limit of £1000 on RV glass makes the policy unattractive and they said they couldn't change it.

So, policy cancelled and I have now gone with NFU who say that there is no glass cover limit ("what it costs to replace, we cover").

Awaiting refund from Sureterm - taken over three weeks so far.

The restricted glass cover was not explained to me at time of quote so I am expecting a full refund as the policy was not suitable for my needs. We'll see what they come up with.

So, NFU wins this year based on comprehensive glass cover and the second cheapest quote.

Hi ya
Unfortunately there is no cover of any kind for Morocco, the Moroccans will not allow any third party recovery or breakdown services into their country you have to pay for a local company to do that or pay them to take you over the border back into Spain where normal service is resumed
Hence the benefit of Desert Detours, the breakdown service follows you all over Morocco and sometimes shows you the way too:thumb::thumb::thumb:

The green card is only proof that an insurance policy is in place that is acceptable to the Moroccan authorities, No green card, no cover, and the last I heard border cover was difficult to obtain

I included that last bit for the benefit of any new folk reading this post not familiar with the green card system

Hi, Geo

Thanks for the reply as I was wondering if Safeguard would extend their breakdown cover along with the green card as that would have saved me having to take out separate breakdown cover.

I believe that ADAC the German company provide full breakdown cover for Morocco and most other countries that surround the mediterranean, or at least that is what I have been given to understand.

Thanks

Hi, it depends on the agent, I've heard others say that NFU refused them ..

try this number, it's the Louth branch 01507600249

you may get a more favourable response

We use Campton Insurance Brokers (UK) Ltd - Godstone, Surrey - 01883 742 460

They have insured our 5th Wheel, Truck Camper and Dodge Ram as one. For breakdown we used RAC with the arrival scheme through C & CC. Which covers any size. I wanted to make sure that our Fifth Wheel would be recovered because of the different hitch. I was assured (by this very nice man in India) that we were covered for any size as long as we with the arrivals scheme (not sure if he understood the hitch set-up). To make sure that we were not stuck on the side of a motorway and no way of recovery we registered with the Commercials side of the RAC. There is no membership fee, only pay on recovery, the costs of which are given to you when registering, so no surprises if the worst should happen. Not cheap but not extortionate either. It just gives us piece of mind.

We are Insured through Adrian Flux (Red Star Policy) and the CCC Arrivals for breakdown and recovery.

Adrian Flux told me that they would issue a Green Card FOC. When I asked for the card they said that they didnt do it anymore and issued me with a letter to explain that I was indeed covered for European Travel. Wasnt very impressed.

One of the posts in this thread implies that a Green Card is mandatory for European travel. As far as I am aware a Green Card is not mandatory but is helpful.

Am I correct?

Cheers Jim

If you look on the back of your actual insurance policy there should be a statement there which provides you with a level of cover at home AND abroad. That is the new form of green card - on my NFU policy it is written in about 5 different languages.

AFAIK Green card isn't required for EU countries, but mandatory for outside the EU .. always advisable to check with your insurer before travel ... some only give 90 days European cover, others are more liberal.
I asked NFU for 365 day green card cover and to include Morocco but I had to stipulate when and for how long I would be in Morocco and there was a surcharge.

Hi,

All UK insurance companies must under European law provide the minimum level of insurance that will cover you under the road traffic act, whilst you are traveling through other member countries, (Basic Third part Risk Only)

But please don't confuse this with a Green Card, there are 2 types of insurance companies the ones that provide you with Full European cover automatically thereby providing you with the same level of insurance that you have in the UK, and the others who only provide the minimum level of cover as required by law automatically and then require you to top this up (sometimes free of charge) by obtaining a Green Card from them

I can tell you from past experience make sure you know which one of the insurance companies you are with and the level of cover you have while traveling, as failure to do this could be extremely costly.

hope this helps, and sorry if it has already been covered
