Hi all,
I just got a quote of £600 to repair a ding. Have never claimed before is this worth doing or will the rise in premium backfire on me ?

My car insurance is up 40% this year & that's taking into account protected max' no claims discount, incident free driving for 38 years, a clean licence & living in a relatively low risk area with a 5,000 mile p.a. mileage restriction.

Get several quotes first & maybe ask your insurance company if the claim will put up your insurance dramatically ?

I would be deciding whether to repair it or not, then if it were me almost certainly just paying it and never mentioning it to my insurers, once you tell them you might find your premium changes even if you don't claim

How bad is it? Mine has a high level scuff that I was going to do but have not got round to, hardly notice it now :)(y)

I think DavidG58 is spot on. If you mention it to your insurer - regardless of whether you claim or not - it will be recorded as an incident on your file and likely result in a higher premium next time.

If it is a minor 'ding' and doesn't involve a possible claim from a third party, then I'd take care of the repair/fix yourself. Certainly worth getting another quote or two. Is it something which could be covered up with a sticker/transfer or something?

If you can either explain a bit more about the damage, or better still, a pic, then you may well get more advice on here of how to get it fixed in the most cost-effective manner. Indeed, you might receive recommendations of specialists who can help you.

At £600 it sounds like more than just a "ding" - or is it a quote from a dealer?
It cost us £800 to repair a fairly large gouge in ours at a small bodyshop (its a shame you're not on the south coast coz I can really recommend the place that did our's). Dealers were quoting about £2.5k. I also considered going via insurance but worked out that for anything less than a grand its cheaper to just pay for it considering that we'd have to declare the claim on the insurance policies for the two cars too.
Do you have a photo of the damage?

It will probably affect the premium on your car as well maybe for a couple of years I would always do it myself as said before if you ask them it may be recorded whethere you claim or not

By the time you have paid the 'voluntary' and compulsory' excess, and expect next years premium +20%, (and include shopping around for the next 3 and some 5 years declaring a claim in 2017), I would bite the bullet and have it fixed privately. From personal experience, don't mention it to insurance as they will log it as an incident and load your premiums.

I claimed for a dent in the MH £2000. I reckon I could have had it fixed for £1500 cash. We lost our no claim bonus, had extra premiums on the MH, car and motorbike. I still have to declare it on insurance quote as it is under 5 years. So i'm still paying 4 years on, I would not claim for anything under £2000 now, unless there was a third party involved

Even if there is a third party claim, you will be loaded for a 'no fault claim'.

Once your insurers get wind of a claim your premium will rise whether you actually claim or not.....the risk just increased.

I am with comfort for my motorhome and have just made a claim they tell me my insurance will go up 17% due to claim which is fair imho. Due next month so expecting renewal terms next week.
Just checked my car insurance which is max ncd protected on confused.com. with majority of insurers no increase by adding claim however some are addino circ £50.
It all depends who you are with

However one thing I will say is most people will see an increase in their motor premiums due to the change in the Ogden Rates. Some motor insurers are adding 20% across all policies as a result.

get it repaired if you come over here. Cheap as chips. Claims on insurance don't make the renewals house/car rise either.

Hmmm,
It would appear I've already screwed up as I thought Id ask saga about the increase in premium should I claim and got another call later in the day from an over assertive and rude woman who insinuated just what you are warning me about in your responses.
Ill post some photos from my phone later. Silly me

Here's the ding, approx 9x2" , I've also got a small one on the other side about 2" round with only slight cracking. The workshop say it's best to paint the whole quarter.
Both on tree branches whilst reversing, very smart.

Ouch, £600 looks quite a fair price now, especially if it includes the other side as well (y)

out of interest if you haven't told them how the damage happened it might help, can't see how they can blame you for damage not caused by you if you don't claim

some economy of the detail maybe required :)

insurers really want it every which way though, been caught at home by the gonnads on similar :(

I can only agree with the approach suggested here. Just pay for the repair or DIY and keep Schtum!

I chose a £350 excess on my insurance, for max discount, for just this reason - no point in paying for a small or zero excess that will get swamped by the hike in charges and sneaky penalties hidden in the claims small print.

Dear Lord ! £600!!!!!!!!! Unbelievable.
Personally I am able to repair stuff like that myself, fortunately, for the cost of matl's & a few hrs . Even taking it to a car refinishing shop down the road I would expect plenty of change from 200€.

Thank all, going to search around, boat repair etc, as it's fiberglass. Attached another photo for prospective. Matching the paint up would be a concern for d.i.y.
The body shop recommend matching it to the rest of the bodywork, white rather than cream.

To be honest £600 sounds like a bargain. We paid £1600 in 2019 after a freak wind ripped the fiamma off the van while we slept (I know we were lazy and tired). Left gaping big holes, a twisted fiamma and new wall boards needed inside. By the time you pay your excess you’ll be halfway there anyway.

All insurance companies will rob you blind. They are fine as long as you keep paying the premiums but god help you if you dare to make a claim.

I've made a couple of claims via comfort one fault, one none fault and were excellent
Premiums for motorhomes are cheap, you should see what businesses have to pay
