Looks like new Belgium van is due to be delivered someday week of 21st October. My question is,

if I pay the Vat before the 31st October Will that be it as imported. Or will the import be the day i do the MOT. Or day swansea receive docs. I can pay vat as soon as i get invoice which may be before 21st

When I imported a new Campervan from Germany it was on German export plates then insured on the vin number when it hits the UK.
As soon as you park it up at home you inform HMRC via the NOVA scheme - via their website - with the price you paid in Belgium.
They work out your vat due.
I am vat registered so I am not too sure if a private individual must then pay HMRC before applying to DVLA for you registration.

Thanks donnkim. Yep, I am pretty keyed up on import as I have done it before. My worry is getting it imported before 31st october, brexit day
Ahem. May find myself in all sorts of chaos after that day. So really questioning what is the part of the process which says import was on this day. Vat, mot, Swansea signing off docs??? Tom

Sorry, I've no definitive answer, but I guess it may be the date on which it physically arrives in the UK. From memory, I think they ask you that question on the DVLA documentation. I seem to remember sending a copy of our ferry ticket with the forms to either DVLA or VOSA .
Keeping my fingers crossed for you that I'm right, and that you manage to avoid any problems .

So what determines the date of import?

Registering an imported vehicle
You must register any vehicle you bring into the UK permanently. You cannot register before you do all of the following:

• tell HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) you imported the vehicle and get confirmation that your NOVA application is processed
• pay VAT and duty if HMRC tells you to
• get proof of vehicle approval

You also tax the vehicle when you register it with DVLA - there’s a £55 fee.

I tried to notify NOVA before I actually arrived in UK - not possible.
Also I agree the Import is the day it lands in th UK.
We will want to import from Germany again next year but really do not know where we stand. God help us if Boris doesn't get us out -- another 3 years of procrastination without out us knowing where we stand.
