Guys, has anyone ever seen this?
Happened one night recently during a cold spell when I had the heating on.

Your avatar shows a post 2007 van, since 2002 all Motorhome appliances have been set to run at 30mb the reg in yor photos is a 37mb regulator that you shouldn't have been using anyway.
In cold weather with the high flow rate heaters like the combi use, the regulator can freeze that is probably what happened. For the modern 30mb regulators you can get heaters but should only be needed in extream conditions.

That has the hallmarks of damage caused externally by an implement.
There can only be two possible reasons why someone would do that - for attempted theft, or for more sinister motives.

This might help a diagram of how a regulator works damage to one Sid i would struggle to give a answer but both sides nope cant under stand that.
LP-Regulator,-exploded-view.jpg

it would take one heel of a vacuum to cues the casting to fale like that i would look more towards deliberate damage by the look's of it with hammer and chisel
the diaframe would fale before the casting in my opinion and a vacuum of that force would not
happen i think

Can't see how it would be damaged on both side if it was a vacuum problem.
Once one side started to split and vacuum would be lost instantly so how could the other hole be made.
Got to agree with others....malicious damage.

@Mark33

Was the regulator in a locked gas cupboard on or a freestanding cylinder, outdoors?

I fully agree that that is mechanicl damage caused by sharpish tool probably a chisel and a hammer, the material in the bottom is crushed. Have you been upsetting people around you recently. ARE YOU WELL INSURED for life insurance?????

@Mark33

As I asked above, was the regulator in a locked cupboard or in the open?

Like other posts I feel it is deliberate damage but, if it was in a locked gas locker, was the locker forced?

I actually wondered at first if maybe the nut was seized and someone had chisseled the holes in the sides to use something to twist the regulator off the bottle.

Can't for the life of me think why anyone would do that but to punch those holes would take a decent bit of effort and make a bit of noise..

Thanks folks. I was running on back up bottle at the time and it was outdoor. I thought it imploded but now think someone was trying to steal the bottle.

Ah! that makes more sense .. although I would have expected them to just turn off the bottle and cut the supply tube, taking the reg as well.

If the regulator is one you shouldn’t have been using anyway and if it was malicious damage try looking at it as they have done you a favour in the long run.

Maybe an accident waiting to happen.

No worries, no one got harmed or worse.....which is the main thing. Gas output was really strong and noisy which alerted me to a problem, so could have been worse.
Leasson learned, keep gas inside van!

Not a lot more to add, apart from , why, far easier and silent methods to just nick it. It's the last part you would think of attacking.:xdoh:

Never seen anything like it before but the fact that it was outside confirms it was either attempted theft or malicious damage.

A new, updated, regulator looks like an ideal Christmas Present.:xThumb:

Now you have said it was outside it makes sence, if it was on the van you were using it do make sure you get the correct one this time, running at too higher pressure can wear out the jets.

It could be that somebody was trying to undo the regulator by turning it ther wrong way and when it tightened got a bit stroppy and tried to bust it off.
