Rapido Le Randonneur
Hi all,
I have joined the forum to see if I can have some assistance from combined minds.
I have a 2004 Rapido Le Randonneur. The van has a FIAT 2.8JTD engine. Last summer holidays the van would not start when we were away. Symptoms were/are: Place key into ignition and fuel light, battery, oil and engine management light (EML) come on. Then there is an audible bleep. Fuel light goes out, battery, oil and EML light remain on. Van turns over but fails to start. I believe that no fuel is getting to the fuel pump and that the immobiliser has operated. To start the van I then used the emergency override code that came with the van. Van started and after 100+ miles EML light went out. Next time I went to start the van as part of the return leg home there were no symptoms and van started fine. The EML went out at the time of the audible beep. However symptoms have now returned.
I have unsuccessfully tried both the main and spare key.

There is a Strike Bike alarm fitted but I do not think this is causing the issues, I think it is the FIAT immobiliser. Battery condition is good and is charged using split relay solar. I had the fault code read on the van and it stated there was a Key Error. Any suggestions or recommendations please?
Thanks Jay

Had similar in our Hobby.

Please note that in the bottom of your display there should be a padlock, indicating the immobiliser.

Put key in Ignition. Turn key and watch for display of symbols (including lock.)
Now turn off Ignition and immediately turn back on.

The Padlock should 'disappear' after a second or two, and, if it does, turn Ignition further and try to start..

See how you go.

Thanks. For other readers no padlock symbol illuminates during anywhere in the sequence. We 'did' see this symbol for the duration of an hour when we had overridden using the manual process (to override). It then went out again.

My MH is with Fiat at this moment in time. Drove to camping site and van running perfectly. Next day went to start van. Turned over but did not start.

RAC stated fuel getting to injectors and was of the opinion it was an immobiliser issue.

Van recovered to Fiat dealer as I believed it was an immobiliser issue. I can’t remember seeing padlock symbol. Tried both keys but no luck.

Fiat have so far replaced BCM as stated faulty. I am awaiting an update. Not happy!

The audible sound was coming from an after market 'gadget' the previous owner had installed. Isolated that now. Checked earth straps from battery terminal to chassis and to starter motor. Purchased heavy duty replacements and will fit when they arrive. Update to follow.

Since May 05 (Ex Tuggers).
I had a similar breakdown in Narbonne some years ago, but on the earlier 2.8TDi.
It turned out to be a failure of the immobiliser, thereby preventing the fuel solenoid from opening, hence the engine turning over, but no fuel getting to the injectors.

Good luck with it. (y)
