For a start download the free MHF magazine by clicking the above link, go to page 19 and enter the competition for a Vanbitz growler alarm (y)

:hiya2: and :WelcomeFlag:.
A good alarm with tracker, as many little deterrents in the van to make it more difficult to drive off ( reverse drivers seat and chain in place, old fashioned crook lock on steering wheel, can’t you get some sort of device that cuts out fuel after half a mile ? Make it difficult and tedious to steal.
Enjoy your new van.

It’s a long time since we had a T2 and the only protection I used was to lock the doors.
They were cheap and difficult to sell. Now they are commanding high prices, I would think about, at the very least, a professionally fitted immobiliser and a heavy duty wheel clamp.
And welcome...

I assume, with the reference to winter, you mean some sort of cover to protect it from the elements?

They are not commonly used and you might have problems using one on a public road, local council might get funny about it and it will look an eyesore too. :)

I suggest just keep it clean and give it a good waxing.

Welcome! :)

Indeed, as already said, put a likkle hidden switch somewhere in the ignition that prevents it starting. Every motorhome owner should do that. I could give you the keys of ours and it would not go anywhere. :gum:

expensive immobilisers are not really cost effect on a T2 as the engine can be isolated completely from the vans wiring loom and still started by anyone who has had experience of owning one with very basic tools, a noisy alarm is ok as the better people in the vw community tend to keep an eye on other vans as well as their own
wheel clamps, battery/fuel cut offs and a tracker were my preferred choice but even then it would only minimally slow down an experienced vw 'scavenger'
taking the rotor arm out used to be the popular anti-theft device but most owners have converted to aftermarket leccy ignition now
get all your lock barrels rebuilt/replaced as the originals will be worn out and could probably be opened with a 5p coin

Hi Strawberry,
I'm a proud owner of a restored 68 vw camper, I dont use it half as much as I should tho, my motorhome goes up big hills abit better and the mpg is better too, that's my excuse ? If you can keep it inside all the better, away from the eyes of theiving scumbags that target the old vw campers ALOT. If not inside then the Maypole Premium cover is a good one.
A tracker is a must with one of these.
Keep your fuel lines tip top and get one of the special sensor fire extinguishers above the engine, way too many are lost to engine fires.
If your not too familiar with aircooled engines "type 2 detectives" do day courses to give people some great advice and basic skills to help keep you on the road.
