Hi All

I’m currently in Germany about to visit Gruibingen (just outside Stuttgart) to do a bit of research on Himself’s family tree (his Great Great Grandfather emigrated from here to the UK in the 1800’s).

We have about 6 weeks left till we have to be back in the UK and plan a gentle meander up through Germany, probably exiting via Koblenz and the Moselle valley. The problem is that we are German ‘virgins’! and have no idea where to go or what to see.

Does anyone have any recommendations or suggestions to help us on our way?

Best wishes

Team GerTee

We did the Moselle last September and you can’t go wrong . The are so many stellplatz sites you will be stuck for choice . Mahring and Reil are very good . Have a read of the rolling meet thread for the Mosel

Mosel is lovely but with that much time I'd cut across to the romantic route, nordlinden, dinklesbhul and Rothenburg ob der Tauber.
Lovely towns and lots of interesting places in the area.
Then do mosel on way back
Or go down to Lake constance where there are lots of nice places and back up romantic route ?
Ulm is worth a visit and Nuremberg looks good but not been there yet.

My Granddaughter lives in Wesel. She has a six year old and they are always out doing zoos, theme parks and cable car to top of a mountain and bike it down. Sorry I only know one site which is next to the Rhine look for signs to the boat in the picture Wesel is a nice little town with plenty of big name shops. Watch out for the donkeys can’t seem to attach pictures will send later?

Auto and Technik Museum, Sinsheim
Technik Museum, Speyer
The Black Forest
Dozens of Thermal Bath/Hot Springs from Stuttgart to the Black Forest
Deutches Eck and Ehrenbreitstein Fortress, Koblenz

Rothenburg O DT . Neuschwanstien , Garmish , Berchtesgaden , Nuremburg . Bayreuth , it just goes on and on You are literally spoilt for choice . and that's Just a small part of Bavaria :)

Technic museums are pretty awesome. Monshou in the Eiffel region is well worth a look. Lap of the old Nurburgring could be fun in a camper

As per some others the black forest is so worthy.
You can do a bit of the alpinestrabbe as well as the romantic road
If you do go to the black forest they have a triple use ticket which may or may not suit some needs.
You can only use it on 3 days and it was about 35 euros so you have to try and get as many things in as you can in one day. Finishing off with a spa each day if you get yourself organised.

Munich worth a days visit. Park in the English Garten
Dechreu concentration camp outside Munich worth a long half day.
If time down to the Eagles Nest, in the Bertchesgarten area , and then you can pop over to Strasbourg.

October fest is coming up shortly so combine that with Bavaria, the castles at Fussen, Rotherburg ODT and the Moselle would be my pick.

I have written up a diary of our recent trip to Southern Germany for a friend, including the camping places, which is in iCloud as I wrote it in PAGES. on my iPad.
If you like I could send you a link but I think I would need your email address to do it.
If interested, send me a PM with your email address.

Have a look at my thread from this month

Should give you some ideas. Broadly we used bits of the Germany by backroads book and visited
- Mosel
- Rothenburg
- Alpenstrasse (Bavarian Alps)
- Regensburg area
I didn’t really want to go to Germany but would go back at the drop of a hat! Totally converted.

Could I have a look at it please.
Need some info to tempt me in.
Will pm if that’s ok.

Looking to go to Germany in 2020, helpful to get some guidance
Search this forum ... loads of info.

In short, we usually holiday in France but ‘had to’ go to Germany this summer. We absolutely lived it. So much so we’re undecided whether to go to France or Germany next summer.

I still haven’t got around to updating the earlier diary with our second trip. Will put a reminder to myself and post on here when done. Won’t be this week, got the grandsons for the next three days!!

Yes, the Romantischestrasse as above and the Romantic Rhine. All three, with the Mosel join up pretty well. Ideally, buy Lonely Planet Best Trips Germany, Austria, Switzerland. Great value off Amazon. Have done a large chunk of it this autumn, last autumn and a bit in July. All three countries. Germany is a boss destination and you're listening to a southern Europe, sunshine fan here! Reawaken your love of Riesling, Gewurtz, Gruner Veltliner and all those Rheinheitsgebot beers Bamburg's smoked beers. Dark Dunkel, Weissbier, Marzein. More to Germany than pilsner and currywurst (nothing wrong with either, though).Left the Mosel this morning. Ferry Wednesday☹☹☹☹☹☹☹☹

We’re having another two stabs at it next year????

The Romantic Route would be one option.

Otherwise pick a river, Elbe, Rhein, Mosel, Weser, and follow sea to Alps.

2 years ago we followed the Baltic coast, loved it, we found Rugen island a wonderful place to stay. (We went for a day or two and spent a week)

We saw motorhomes from all over Europe except the UK, I think in 2 weeks we did not see a single one.

English not that well spoken in former Eastern Germany (especially not by the older generation), but we survived with a dictionary

We may be back this Summer

We went Castle Road and Romantic Route, then into Austria to see Eagles Nest, you can camp near the bus station, about 100 yards up the hill.
We also went to Sindsheim to the Technology Museum, the one with the 2 Concordes (Konkordski) on the roof.

Didn't you mean Salzburg? :D
