I saw a thread a while ago that listed what information needs to be engraved on the dog's tag on his collar for travelling in Europe. I've searched unsuccessfully and I can't find it :(!!

I can remember the requirement for full mobile phone number +44 etc but cannot remember what else.

A reminder would be gratefully appreciated :), thanks.

I wasn`t aware of any requirement for a dog tag in Europe
Where did this come from ?
I've not heard of this either, and I thought I had done my research pretty well on what we'll need to take our dog over. Haven't come across any requirements for a dog tag anywhere - other than the UK requirement under the Control of Dogs Order 1992 that any dog in a public place must wear a collar with the name and address of the owner engraved or written on it, or engraved on a tag attached to it.

In UK, dog tag should have owners' surname and postcode with house name or number (see Kennel Club). But saw a thread saying different information required in Europe.

Found this for UK:-
In the UK, the Control of Dogs Order 1992 states that any dog in a public place must wear a collar with the name and address (including postcode) of the owner engraved or written on it, or engraved on a tag. Your telephone number is optional (but we would recommend this).

You can be fined up to Ā£5,000 if your dog does not wear an identification tag.

You do not have to put your dogs name on the tag, this is optional. Unfortunately dog theft is a real danger and if the thief knows the name of your dog this may help them pass on the dog to the unsuspecting new owners because it appears they know the dog because the dog responds to their name. We would therefore recommend, you do not put your dogs name on the tag.

An example of the information to put on a dog tag is:

Mr A Smtih
No 54, BH17 7TD
01202 232218

OR

Mr A Smtih
No 54 Letsbe Avenue
BH17 7TD
01202 232218

Maybe I just need to put the mobile number with the +44 in place of the home phone number. The address seems a little irrelevant (n)

Don't know legally, suspect it varies by country, most important thing being it includes the information that'll get them back to you if lost.

Mine have mobile number, pstcode, house number, surname and van reg, sewn into their bandannas and proper tag on harnesses. One of them also has a second tag asking to scan his chip for medical info and phone number of vet hospital

I like the idea of MH registration on the tag. And 'scan the chip' :), thanks.

Works well for peace of mind at least, the dufus is on a lot of medication and woudl get proper sick without it, that way even if I'm not contactable he'll likely get to a vet, (his tag actually says take me to a vet I think too.)

We use plastic key rings for our dogs as we can change the info as/when necessary and they don't rust, this is the sort I mean:

No special requirement for Europe as far as I know.

Ours have tags with their name, "I'm chipped so scan me", our house number and postcode and both our mobile numbers.

Why is there a need for dog tags when all dogs should be chipped?

... because if a dog is found you don't need to scan it if it has a tag on.

While we're on the subject of chips, I logged in to https://www.petlog.org.uk/ today to check my mobile number on my dogs chip was correct and found they've changed a few things.

Notably all phone numbers on file MUST now start with the country code (e.g. +44) and they reject numbers starting with a 0.

They also let you upload a photo now that will be used on Lost Dog alerts.

If you've not updated your doggychip details recently, please do, imagine if you had an old phone number on file and they couldn't reach you :(

Getting better month by month.
My dogs have a qr code in their tag and when scanned leads to their web page with info and pictures etc. Also the standard surname, phone and house no and post code.

How do you get a QR code?

Ours just have surname and mobile phone. We have always assumed that if they went missing it would be while we were away and so address unhelpful as we would not be there.

I'd second using your mobile number. Years ago I used my house phone number on tag, dog escaped (thanks mr window cleaner) I returned home after hours searching to a voice message from someone who'd had her all that time and was 1 street away! New tag bought the next day.
