Now I know...

Wild fires raged in my area of Central Portugal...

I watched horrified as burning debris fell all around the Hymer.

The fires really moved fast.

I grabbed my wallet and phone and fled on foot...

Flames were flaring up all around me as I left QMJ via the (burning) bottom wood and, when my escape route to the road was blocked by more flames, I sought refuge in the nearest house. Two old ladies and a very old man were in it.

My (very worried people) contacted me after seeing the fires on the news and they told the old folk about damping towels etc and contacted the Fire People to tell them where we were.

We were eventually rescued by the old folks' relatives after the fires reduced, and were led to a safer house.

Anyhow.

After several hours, I just had to find out if the Hymer and all my meagre possessions had gone... and walked back to QMJ.

All is un-damaged I think.

Will know more in the light of day...

A very, very, very relieved Rufty Tufty Off Site Funster...

Bloody hell JJ, I thought you were going to say you woke up & it was all a nightmare - I got the nightmare bit right. That must have been absolutely terrifying. I've watched wildfires in USA (from a distance) & while they're 'exciting' they're certainly not fun.
Really pleased that you, your neighbours, & your stuff are all safe.
Hoping for more rain for you too!

I also thought it was going to be an "and then I woke up" story.

@JJ that is a really scary account and I'm pleased that you and your property are ok.

I too was reading it waiting on the punchline coming.

Sounds scarey and the fire fierce looking but good to hear all is ok.

You might have ended up with nothing more than a cooked Fray Bentos.

Hope the motorhome is ok, but more importantly you got out ok.
Years ago when I lived in Wales there was a local craze for setting fire to the mountainsides, different gangs of kids seeing who could get the most firefighters out, I was told. Absolute stupidity and those fires spread fast just over grass and low shrub that wasn't tinder dry like Southern Europe.

Glad you are OK JJ...

Had QM got caught up in it...

your land would of grown back stronger, and you can pick up an old Hymer for next to nothing these days...

But your world renown lettuce.... now that`s a different story...:giggler:

Stay safe mate.. (y)

Glad to hear you´re OK and your home is too. We had a large fire here several years ago, managed to stop it at our garden fence when the wind dropped, so know just how scary it is!

Just read the story on the BBC news and immediately thought of you. Glad you're ok. Hopefully the rain will dampen things down a little.

Fingers crossed that this is the end of the episode.

We are so relieved JJ that you are okay! I saw how close to you it was but didn't realize how very close it got. Glad you were able to find refuge.

A terrible tragedy with so many lives lost.

Caravan since 1970, motorhome or RV since 1999 then back to a caravan in 2017.
After reading of this, and other recent, fires it is so good that yours has a happy ending. Hope full investigations prove the Hymer to be 100%.
