When I connect the hook up I have to switch on a small unit located under the passenger seat to get power. This unit when switched on has a fan inside which intermittently switchgear on and off. Can anyone tell me if this is normal or is it something I should have checked out.

The unit under the seat is likely to be a habitation battery charger. If the fan is cutting in and out it is working hard.

If you have no lights / 12volt without charger on then hab battery is either flat/goosed or has a separate isolator. My hab battery and charger are under the passenger seat. But has a big red key battery isolator on the side of the seat.

Does the control panel give you battery condition?

If you are struggling with panel post a picture of it and someone may be able to give you a hand.

On most motorhomes you just connect the EHU lead. Nothing else. Then all 240v sockets now work, and the battery charger just does its thing.
