I have a Comfort insurance policy with Aviva on my Hymer B678 motorhome (A class).

Just reported what I thought was a routine chip for repair only to be told that it was a whole replacement job because the chip damage is in excess of 1.5cm and is within the sweep of the wipers. Is that correct do you reckon?

This is all with Autoglass. I am waiting for their "specialist team" to ring me back with an appointment. The lady I spoke to said that they will be providing a generic screen. i.e. not from Hymer but made of the same type of glass. Is that OK, or can I insist that I have a Hymer one?

The maximum windscreen damage on my policy is £3,000. Anybody had a 2015 Hymer B class windscreen replaced and if so how much was it roughly?

I am concerned about leaks forming. I would welcome any comments on Autoglass's specialists and is there anything I need to look out for when they are fitting it.

Finally is there anyway I can get my German and French Aire quality stickers off without ruining them, or do I have to buy them again.

Thanks for any help you can give

Peter

I believe Jock @JockandRita had one replaced on his Hymer .. and he insisted it was a genuine Hymer screen.. If I recall correctly it is manufactured by Pilkington Glass .. and has Hymer marked on the glass... but Jock will give chapter and verse

I would also insist it was genuine Hymer.

Watching progress on the screen Peter, as for the stickers, a hair dryer not too hot will help and a razor blade... pull very slowly...
Good luck :)

I had the windscreen replaced by Autoglass on my Hymer b585 in Aug. When Autoglass came and fitted the new windscreen I must confess they were very effecient and professional about the job. First thing they did was to take and compare measurements accurately of the old and new screens, the new screen was spot on even down to the alignment of the holes in the screen being bang on central for the 3 window wipers (which they even supplied new sheaths for).
Two and a half months on and no signs of leaks.

Ever since lighting was by Calor gas.
Hymer will certainly buy in their screens, possibly from the very same manufacturer as the 'generic' one. I doubt that the total market for that Hymer screen would justify several manufacturers.
Perhaps Autoglass have 'generic' screens as a 'genuine' screen would take too long to obtain for holidaymakers...........?
From my understanding of the eye-watering cost of some Hymer parts by putting their name on the screen it probably enables them to hike the price a fair bit.

Might be worth getting the price for the Hymer genuine part. If the cost of the screen is over the £3,000 insurance limit Comfort/Aviva may not care one way or the other, because you will be paying the balance.

Can't remember ;)
Hi Peter chances are the generic glass will be made by the same place Hymer get them from ---fitting wise if Autoglass are doing the fitting they will do/make the same job no matter where the screen came from ---Although I look at the screen for chips/scratches when buying a vehicle I cannot ever remember looking for a screen name on the screen IE,Ford VW ,Swift or Hymer :D

My original Hymer windscreen was made by an Italian company called Bertone Glass. The one I've got fitted now does exactly the same job.

These people http://www.psvglass.com/ always seem to get a good write up via the Hymer Owners Group on Facebook and Classic Hymers on Facebook.

They are more specialist that Autoglass, and will/do work with the insurer to get round any “preferential supplier” deal that the insurer might have.

Might be worth calling them and seeing if they can do anything sooner/ better for you?

Edit - not used them personally, only passing info on from others who have used them and speak highly of them..

We have just had a stone hit our screen, it’s got some small cracks from the chip, will call auto glass who our insurers say we need to use, if it’s a repair job, it’s £100 excess

We had our screen replaced a few months ago by Autoglass. Very professional service - they send out a specialist team to handle all motor home jobs. They had to order a genuine screen from Travelworld, so it took around 2weeks for the screen to arrive. Its list price was around £1500 + vat so was easily covered by our policy with only the £75 excess to pay.

I would insist on a genuine Hymer screen I don't believe there generic screens have the anti glare coating the OEM ones have. Also too many horror stories of problems with generic screens in A classes.
When is your insurance due for renewal Peter as from April this year with Comfort windscreen cover is unlimited providing Autoglass do the fitting.
I think your screen will come in well below the £3k anyway.

NFU has no limit on windscreen cover. The excess is £50 if you use their preferred supplier or £70 if you opt to use someone else e.g. Hymer.

Check the small print of your policy, it may state the insurers may use non genuine parts of an equal or better quality.
If that clause is in there, which it most probably will be, there's little you can do as you accepted the clause when you took the policy

Thanks everybody.

My screen has got the Hymer logo on it and is made by Bertone Glass.

Got a phone call from a muppet in our local Autoglass specials depot who knew less than me about motorhome windscreens! Sent me a questionnaire which required me to measure the screen, take some photos of the motorhome and give them other info which they should already have. Did that and then told them the important thing they had not asked, which was mine is RHD. Hymer wipers come out of holes in the windscreen and are handed the same way as wipers are between LHD and RHD.

I have got the price for a genuine Hymer windscreen from our dealer and will compare with what Autoglass say. Also got an approximate fitting price from them as well

Thanks @Lenny HB I renewed in June, so that may apply to me.

The chip extends to more than 1.5cm, includes to micro-cracks that are spread out. It is in the swept area, although low down on the passengers side so does not effect my field of vision at all. I ma due an MOT mid November. Will this be a fail if not repaired?

Our screen got chipped a couple of years ago. Larger than yours and low down on the passenger side (lhd), so not in my field of view. Notified insurers (Saga) and then had to take it to nearest National Windscreen depot. They resin repaired it and has been ok since. Didn’t have to pay anything. Has passed two MOTs, no problems. I was happy that I didn’t have to go through the hassle of having another screen fitted as we were just about to go away for a month a few days later.

Autoglass say your car may fail its MOT if:
  • The windscreen is chipped or cracked. The maximum damage size is 10mm in the drivers’ line of vision (a vertical strip 290mm wide centred on the steering wheel), 40mm elsewhere in the rest of the area swept by the wiper blades.

Had 2 screens replaced on our Carthago, both by Autoglass.
Having heard tales of patern screens not fitting well I insisted they supply the OEM screen from Bertone. They turned up with a patern screen but fortunately I checked it before I would let them start. They went off and ordered the correct one which was fitted after a three week delay.
Second time they had all my details and did the job correctly with the correct screen which they ordered from a Carthago dealer.
I replaced the Crit-Air sticker with a new one, for €4 it’s not worth trying to remove the old one.

PS. 2 new screens in 3 years, last one fitted in August, and just got a huge chip again but right on the bottom edge of the screen. I daren’t contact the insurance co again or I’ll be black balled. :(

Richard.

Chip repair kits used to be available from car shops. Probably not as good as the professional kit but hopefully good enough to seal the hole and reduce the chances of a crack developing.

We had our screen replaced by Autoglass, they did a good job and even came out after 6 months to correct a fault on where the rubber was sitting (came to a campsite) but I do think the new screen seem softer than the original, it got a far few scratches on it now , after about 2 years, which the old one never had and that was probably 14 years old

Anything is better than an Autoglass repair. They did one on my car looks awful, repaired one on the Motorhome myself far better job.
