Problem with my electric step, it extends okay using the switch inside the door but will not retract. However it will retract using the button on the dash, would this point to a faulty switch?

Sounds like it, as the step is going in and out relays and motor are ok.
Pop the switch out and short out the connections to see if it works. May even be a lead come off the switch or the relay box.
