Hi we’re looking to buy a motor home and have come down to choosing between Hymer Starline 640 or B 544 . Any feedback/advice on either of these appreciated- which wd you go for?
640 are lovely vans but I would go for manual or full auto, not Sprintshift, if choosing one from 2000-2006.
If you can find a late nineties model 640 then they are excellent quality, especially with the 2.9 gearstick on the floor. Ensure you check the underfloor especially from the rear wheels back as they were timber construction.
Also shower trays and bathroom sinks crack over time.
We have a later model B544 on the Fiat 2.3 130bhp engine. Living up here in the Highlands can sometimes be a bit challenging with the 130bhp engine.
If we had the option we would have got a 150bhp model, but when buying used, you have to take what's available. I'm not saying it's underpowered at all, but when you have a steep long incline with a bend at the bottom, we can't get a run up to start so end up in 2nd or 3rd gear.
We love ours, lots of living space even for George and his bed under the table. If you go for B544, try to get the Maxi Chassis 4250kg version, which will give you at least 300kg spare capacity without even trying to skimp on loading her up.
We own a 2004 544. Classed as a 5 berth but we’ve never even tried setting up the dinette bed. Fiat 2.8jtd engine which has never let us down all over Europe. The reason we bought this layout was the space, only two of us so the drop down bed is perfect and doesn’t take up any lounging space.
If I could buy the exact same layout in a newer van I would have one again.
Oozzie
I have a 2002 S630 (rear lounge) with the 2.9 Merc engine and gearstick in the floor. Mechanically faultless given its age! Pretty much echo CazPaul comments, definitely check the wooden section behind the rear wheels. I bought mine knowing it was a bit rotten in places but have caught it in time for now and doesn't cost the earth to replace. Also had a cracked sink and again was easy/cheap to replace
