Hello. The pleated fly screen on our Hymer has jammed. We've tried cleaning the channel it runs along. Got lots of gunge out but its not that. It goes 3 quarters of the way open and then jams. Looks like it could be something to do with the threads but they appear to be in tact. Has anyone any idea what the problem could be? And can we fix it? We're having to breath in big time to get through the door.:D

Best way is to uncrew the frame and take the whole thing out, on a previous van one of the strings broke I took the whole assemble out and disected it on the lounge floor.

Thanks Lenny, don't fancy doing that at the moment as we're in Spain and haven't got a lounge floor

As Lenny HB says, take out the frame and fix it on the floor. Although we are not lucky enough to have a Hymer, the string broke on our screen and we managed to replace the string. Putting the frame back was easy and we now have a functional screen again. We were quoted £380 for a new screen excluding fitting. So worth having a go yourself.

Hi Peeps. Thanks for your help. We've had to break a string on the screen so we could push the blind across. Otherwise we couldn't close the door. We'll just leave it like that now until we get home. Then we'll have a go at taking it off. Might be needing a bit more help then. :D
This has been one of those trips where everything that can break has. Now got a problem with the sink tap. So lots to do when we get back.

Gosh Hilary sorry to hear about all the mishaps but see you are making good use of the forum for getting solutions and ideas about how to deal with them.

Shall we expect another thread about the sink tap ?:)

Don't think there'll be a thread about that. We know what the problem is and it needs a microswitch. A bit inconvenient. Are you off soon? We're currently at Zahora. Site of the battle of Trafalgar. Very nice stretch of coast line.

If you come to replace the string, I'm happy to send you instructions how we did it.
Was a bit fiddly but wasn't too difficult.

Thanks I would really appreciate that. It might be a good thing to add to the resources as well as we can't be the only ones to have had the problem.
Oooooh just spotted that you live in York. We're just near Ripon. Lived in York, Huntington, before we moved here.

Hi All
we're just in the middle of attempting this repair now. We've got the screen out and the frame is dismantled. Just can't see how to get the actual netting bit away from the fixed edge. It looks like it will slide out of the leading edge. Any advice appreciated.

As far as we can remember, it does slide out of the leading edge and not the fixed edge. See 5 in the photo I sent you.
Bon courage!

When I changed some netting it was held in place by an insert. Remove insert, place fresh netting over, press in insert and it tensions the netting. Mine was a frame and the insert went all round.

Hi Neil Where are you? Still enjoying your trip I hope.
It looks like the threads go into the fixed edge. So we're baffled.

Hi Hils and Glenns, we're still travelling and are in Burgundy at present. Heading back early April. Will look at our screen first thing tomorrow and see if we can add some light to the problem you're facing. When are you off again?

The threads do go into the fixed edge. Hence the need to open the screws (or in our case the pop rivets) to take apart the fixed edge of the frame so as to get access to the string. Not sure if this helps.

Thanks Neil. We haven't got plans for a trip abroad until September, when we're going to twin lakes so Glenn can fish, hoping to go on to Northern Greece after that but nothing booked at the moment.
We're booked on a couple of Fun rallies in the uk before then.

Sounds great. We went to the Peloponnese last June taking a month to do so but to get back before it got too hot. Thinking of Greece again but like you, in September when temperatures fall a little. We really loved Greece.

We love Greece too but have never been in the van. We've spent quite a long time in the Peloponnese especially on the Mani Peninsula.
