I've a 2012 German import Ford based Hymer exsis-i 562. When the DLRL are on all the side lights are on as well, front, rear and side. Is this normal with German Hymers?

As a side issue, our toad is a 2013 Suzuki Alto, which doesn't have DLRL. I thought all vehicles of that age should have them.

we noticed in Norway and Sweden that quite a few cars had DRL's with rear lights, but also plenty that didn't o_O doesn't really answer your question, sorry

never really understood why only front lights were thought to be sufficient

Sounds like the relay that turns the side lights of is faulty.

@LennyHB Any idea where the relay would be? There's an empty socket where the Ford owners handbook which came with he camper says it should be. I'm wondering if Hymer modify the vehicle lighting circuit over and above what they need to do to connect to A class lights.

I reckon I would leave well alone, really cant think why the designers of these only put front lights on anyway, I see people driving round on them in the dark, no idea how they do that, I did think (or at least on mine) they are linked to the auto sensing lights so should bring on full lights in the dark

Because they are incredibly bright and the driver things he has got his headlamps on. I've driven off like it myself but twigged after about a 100yds as there were no dash lights. Even easier to do on the current van as the dash lights are on all the time the ignition is on.

I take your point Lenny, and I'm in no rush to change it to DLR only, but I'd like to know why they do this. I don't want something failing in the middle of nowhere. Bundesvan checked with the German dealer, who said he THOUGHT only the front lights should come on.

I think only new models of vehicles had to have them from 2010. The 2013 Alto was probably unchanged since before then. The Suzuki Celerio has them.

Nothing to do with year of manufacture it is the year they the vehicle was tyre approved, so if your 2013 vehicle was type approved in 2009 it does not have to have them.

According to a reply on the Ford Transit Forum, 'UK euro5 MK7’s had parking lights and headlights on for DRL.', so I'm assuming it's something to do with the original Ford wiring, and not worry about it.

The ML's have the Almond Eyes headlamps so it will have a standard 21 Watt bulb. Don't know if you change to LED's if you need ballasted bulbs on the Merc, you don't with the Fiat as the DLR circuit is not on the CANBUS blub failure circuit

Lenny, is it difficult to change the DLRs on the Fiat almond eyes? If it is easy I may well change them. I am also thinking of changing the dip beam bulbs to LEDs too because the headlights seem very dim. Do you know if that is feasible?

We have a transit based chausson all our lights are on as DRL I suspect its a ford thing and normal certainly wouldn't start to fiddle with the electrics. If it was wrong the most it will cost are a few more bulbs!

On the Exsis we had it was easy to change the DRL's I think it is a little harder on the B class as bonnet access is not as good, you just need long arms. You with probably need to change the bulb holders as well as they overheat and burn out.
LED headlamp bubs are avalible that just plug in but there aren't any legal aftermarket ones available, decent branded ones like Philips are £175 a pair and not sure if the ballasat resistors are extra. Have a look here Power Bulbs are one of the biggest aftermarket suppliers.

The answer will depend what type of motorhome you have on that Sprinter base. If it is a PVC or C class then it will probably be Merc lights. If it is an A class it will be Hymer.
