I'm trawling through various sites to see if I can find any technical info for the Mercedes 416. What I want to know is- on a 2006 what will the Revs be at say 55 MPH? and what could I expect as a average fuel economy. This is because the last 700 we had was so noisy at cruising speed it was uncomfortable and it couldn't pass a fuel station! However it was a 1994 with the old 2.9 engine. I have also been advised to stay clear of the Sprint Shift box, any thoughts ???

Hi we have a motorhome based on the 416 sprinter chassis, the sprintshift box is the best thing since sliced bread. It is a MANUAL box with a hydraulic clutch that simulates an automatic. you can drive it as a manual if you wish. ours is a 2.1 engine and weighs in at around 4ton still running in was doing 24mpg, now 25mpg and pulls like a train up any hill, twin rear wheel drive and to my mind the ideal base vehicle. As to revs I have never looked fuel consumption is really down to how you drive and engine size, the old Hymer 700 had a 3.75 ltr engine I believe they were noisey and thirsty at around 17mpg. Though a great van yours obviously newer with a smaller engine. If fuel consumption is top of your list you must sacrifice payload and go for a smaller van. My fuel figures are based on annual 2500 mile trips over all conditions fuel measured brim to brim.

See my reply to a recent question about auto boxes:

In the case of a B700 Star-Line, it will obviously depend on whether you find an auto or manual. My B630 is based on a 316 chassis. I think the final drive gearing may be different on a 416 and the wheel diameter may be smaller (mine runs on 225 70 R15 tyres). At around 55mph my engine is turning over at around 2,500 RPM. Then, of course, the B700 is plated at around 700 kg more than my B630. I would guess at around 22 mpg as a reasonable estimate of fuel consumption for the B700.

We had a B700 for about four years, with sprint shift, 416 and 2.7 litre.

I agree with Wildman, an absolutely first class gearbox, smooth and quiet, I thought our revs were about 2200 at 55mph.

Mileage, 26 mpg, and that's with a tow car for the first two years, after that, no more towing, still the same consumption!!
