I recently lost my best pal who was a well travelled serious motorhomer. My pooch Diezel, he got to the ripe old age of 16 before old age took him, he used to absolutely buzz when he heard the motorhome start up and absolutely loved life.
We recently upgraded our motorhome and we was yet to try it out but unfortunately Diezel didn't get that far.

Now I've always said no more dogs BUT.....I think I prefer dogs over humans ? you lot don't count of course haha.

I was wondering how some of you cope with Giant breeds and motorhoming? Diezel was a Siberian Husky so not the biggest of breeds and we coped well in a 7.5m motorhome but I'm tempted by bigger doggies now.

Feel free to share how you find it and pics of your large/giant doggies in the motorhome.

R.I.P Diezel ♥️

Aw Diezel is just beautiful. We have a standard doodle in a 6.3m PVC. We’re not small and travel with 15yo adult-sized teenager. All good. But n t time I’m getting a miniature schnauzer. Or two. ?

Can’t help really as we have 2 pocket size dogs but saw a motorhome that had converted the garage to a large dog pen where you could open both doors and let the breeze blow blow through. There was a door internally between the garage and the motorhome too and the dog was able to get out of the way and tuck itself away. The dog was huge and seemed very happy with set up.

I made my hubby exam it very carefully as if every I got bigger beastie would want the same.

in answer to your question re big dogs, our furbert, saul is a 50kilo russian black terrier who accompanies us in our 6m adria twin, fixed bed, so he has the underneath of bed as hi space, plus wherever else he fancies of course....

wont fib, it can be 'cosy' when it is to wet or cold to be out, which he prefers as he can see whats going on....

We once saw four large husky type dogs get out of a VW T2 pop-top when it pulled up on a site (or aire, can't remember which now). We were told that they all got on well whilst travelling and managed sleeping etc. very well. Dogs are very adaptable - witness the strange positions some on here have photographed.

We have a medium sized dog and we fall over her. I wouldn’t want anything bigger.

We have a 13-year-old 30+kg Dalmatian. He's always loved travelling in the van but, unfortunately he's now not very mobile and my OH has to lift him in and out of the van. We bought a ramp, but he won't use it and the dog is not always co-operative in being lifted in and out.

Although we love large dogs, and have never had a small breed, we'd think long and hard about having another large one. Bearing in mind that a dog may live to be 13 or 14, or even older, my husband doesn't want to find himself, at the age of 80, struggling lift a 30+kg dog in and out of the van.

Must admit ours are a handy size for lifting and occasionally carrying - do love a big dog which we were used to before taking on the two little terrors (hubby still occasionally pats ours on the side and nearly knocks the poor buggers over) but they are more convenient :D2

We are in Spain. We are surrounded by small dogs and boy do they bark? It drives me nuts and is the main reason I wouldn’t have a small dog.

not long enough
We had 6 years motorhoming with Lola our Bernese, all 50kg of her, so we knew we had her, our major advantage earnt her the family nickname of ‘doorstop’. She got herself comfy and that was it, virtually motionless unless we needed her to move ?

We know funsters with multiple big dogs, now that must be a challenge ?

But I would rather large and sedate than medium and bouncy ??

We are on our first few months without Lola and miss her to bits but have commented on the extra floor space

She also much preferred out to in ?

many many years! since I was a kid
we travel with our 3 staffies, Ceran & Merlin being 20kg range, but Ronnie is labrador size at 30kg plus. We wouldn't be without them, but they can really get in the way in the van

I am sure with a bit more training you could get your husband to use that ramp. Have you tried a cattle prod.

Hi from another Nordic breed!

Our girl is 53KG of Alaskan Malamute and she absolutely loves the adventures that the motorhoming life brings her with each and every trip. New places to investigate, new people to meet, new doggies to play with, she can't get enough of it.

We get on ok in our van, the three of us tour the UK in our 6m PVC, no issues to report really ?‍♂️

She's taller than my wife too :blusher:

I'm so sorry to hear about Diezel, it is absolutely heart breaking when they have to leave us

Hopefully newfpark Anne will see this. She travels in a PVC with two Italian Spinones, they are lovely dogs.

She will be able to give you pros and cons.
And she had 2 Newfoundland’s before the Spinones!

aww, sorry to hear of your loss....

yes we travel with our two miniature poodles, Tara and Betty Bear(s) they only weigh 65kg each so we have a tag axle 5.5t motorhome to accommodate them.
They have loved coming away with us in the snow and sun for years. Although Sadly Tara now 12 struggles to get in the van she does come sometimes. She has had jobs as Fun Marshal and security over the years. Alas, though she is feeling her age now but still lovely. Betty, is only 4 and full of life.

go for it I say, your dog will fit in to your lifestyle regardless. drago35uk has three of the most gorgeous Bernease Mountain dogs in a reasonable sized van. They fit, and that's that.
