I was wondering if I would get a better reception using one of these than using my mobile phone as a hotspot. We have a PVC so are encased in metal. I could sit the Huawei device on the roof or use an antenna which of course I can't with the phone. Does anyone have any experience of these please

When I had a PVC, I got a bad signal with both my phone and my Huawei MiFi when we were inside with the (foil backed) blinds down. Placing the MiFi on the roof did make quite a big difference. But in the end, I went for a Poynting external aerial.

I've since changed to a coachbuilt. Signal issues don't seem to be as bad. The cheapo 4G diamond antenna I got from Amazon is useless. Placing the MiFi on the roof doesn't make as much difference.

I use a 5577 mifi, and it gives better speeds than my mobile. I’m in the process of fitting an Huawei 4G router - 535-232 - which gives even better speeds with a decent antenna.

MiFi's are often better at picking up the signal but it can be pot luck as a lot of cell masts transmit on multiple bands & sometimes the phone will log onto a band with a stronger signal than the one the Mifi logs onto.

That’s what I use, powered through one of these

In simple terms please what does that device do?
I your asking about the one in my post, it gives power to my router set at 12 volts, rather than the 13.5 volts the van is and also has a USB port on it

We have a Fiat Ducato PVC and I put a Poynting MIMO aerial on the roof, forward of the rooflight over the sitting area. It was connected to a Huawei 5577C router with a sim from "3". Wiring came through the cab roof, forward of the "B2 pillar (beware the double skinned bit of the cab roof!), via a roof gland and mounted the router in the overcab storage area, above the driver's seat. Installed a 12v USB socket near to the router to feed it with 5v.

Works fine so far but not really compared performance to the same sim in a phone, inside the metal van.

I've had a lot of success with the same mifi as yours. We just pop it out on the roof (in a plastic bag if wet) and seems to get a better signal than my phone on EE

Well I bought the 5577 mifi £45 on Ebay, works a treat inside the van even without the aerial although I will be getting one. I went for the Smarty SIM card but I have since fond out Vodafone do a similar scheme called Voxi. These can be deactivated when not in use the reactivated as required. All good so far

I have an e5577 that is next to useless. It came with a pair of antenna but has no where to plug them in. Can anyone suggest something decent around the 100 pound mark?

Huawei are a pain for making lots of different versions of the same device, but without changing the name. Some e5577 have antenna connections, some don't.

I had an e5577 in my previous panel van, but it was a version with sockets. Inside the van, neither my phones or the MiFi produced good throughput. Short term, I used to put the MiFi on the dash or on the roof to get a better signal. Long term, I got a Poynting roof antenna and it worked really well. In my new van, I got another cheap e5577, but in a coachbuild, the signal inside doesn't seem as bad.

you have to watch it with model sub designation as some don't have antenna interface ports .

prev post just beat me to it :)

I have the E5577c. The antenna sockets are beneath a cover shown partially open in photo. It works well in my pvc without antenna but I got a cheap one off eBay that does increase reception, usually adds at least a bar. I place the unit either behind a plastic window or roof light and it's a great improvement on my phone reception. I'm using the router as a WiFi extender at the moment as I'm self isolating in the van on our drive. Bit of a God send as I can't get tv reception via the Roof ariel so watching live tv via WiFi and lots of old films.

As said by others you need to be careful on the sub-model you order as the e5577 has a few.
The model you were really wanting would probably be the e5577Cs-321 with the larger battery however, I believe, the e5577 range is now discontinued.
I also think Huawei no longer offer an external aerial functionality unit in the UK so probably have to look at an alternative brand (if any do now offer this functionality).
