Hi can any body advise the best way to drive and bed in a new motorhome so as to make sure the engine runs OK?

Just drive it like you stole it ! Seriously though just drive it, do not labour it at low revs, and run it through its rpm range, and do not sit at a constant rpm for hour after hour in its first 500 miles

Do what it says in the base van handbook.

I think that most modern vehicles don't have a set running in regime anymore and the vast majority of motorhome owners are never going to keep it anywhere near the life of the mechanical components unless they're poorly designed and made and going to fail anyway.

VERY few vehicles these days need 'running in' . Drive normally and, occasionally,(up a hill for example once it's warmed up) take it through it's Rev range for a few minutes, this will clear the tubes and lubricate the full linkage travel.

I have found that driving a new vehicle through all the gears without labouring each and don’t stay in top gear too much works. Most new engines don’t need running in but it doesn’t do any harm to use the full range of the engine smoothly and often for the first 2 or 3 thousand miles to will help it.
if your handbook says service every 20000 miles then bear in mind the base vehicle is a commercial setup which is expected to be run every day on deliveries etc. You should consider at least an oil and filter change every 12000 like you would your car, remember the engine in your van is basically a car engine so why would you service differently ?

Most modern vehicles don't like being " babied" they are designed to be worked .

They don’t run new ambulances in. Thrashed from day one and still going after 150,000 miles or couriers vans

Running in, in the true sense of the old practice isn't needed with modern tolerances, but it will do no harm to be a little gentle in the first few hundred miles. Of course running in applies not only to the engine but many other components. Tyres may take a few miles to get a full grip, and brakes a little while for the pads to maximise bedding to the discs. But then if the vehicle is brand new you are also likely to be gentle in your driving as you get used to how it handles and gain confidence in how much to put your foot down (or not).

I know aircraft and car engines are different but the worst thing to do with a new or rebuilt piston aircraft engine is treat it really gently

Drive it normally without straining it, which you should never do anyway. I was always taught to keep the engine running freely.

You'll find that as the mileage increases the motor will "loosen" a little bit which will give you better performance - mine started being noticeable at around 7,000 miles up to around 15,000. It's got 137,000 on now (07 plate X250) and runs like a dream!
