Try saving it then rename it, do make sure you have PC set to show full file type or you will end up with a .reg.txt file extention.

use quotes to save the file - type the name as "xp.reg" including the quotes when saving that will solve the txt extension problem

Do you perchance have a similar procedure for ensuring the longevity of Mr Edison's patent wax cylinder audiophonic apparatus? I am most desirous of ensuring its continued operation, being something of a traditionalist in all matters technological and mechanical.
