Some of travelers hoped to drive their own car through china. It could be an good idea and it is also possible. But very few of them knows how to do and where to sort for help. Some people mistakenly thought just apply an international driving license then can drive through China or easy to exchange China driving licence. So you will be stopped at the gate of China for sure!

Driving through China by your own vehicle is a complicated project, also a money costing tours. China government is very strict with the overland tour in China with foreinger's own vehicle because of national defense security. So the permits from a lot of government departments are required, such as tourism, police, miliatry, transportation, foreign affaire office, Custom, etc. It is a complicated project, the application taking about months normally, only when all of the permits are obtained, the tranfic police department can issue you temporal driving license and temporal plate. It is impossible for foreinger driving into China with only international driving license or carnet paper, but they will be important proof for their driving skill qualification.

And the driving route is fixed once permit by the government, foreinger can not change it. Also during the trip, a Chinese crew from Chinese tour company, also called tour escort or guide, is obliged to stay with the group for the whole trip. He / she will provide service of translation, guiding also escorting. It means that your vehicle must have a seat for him or her.

Not all of China tour companies can do this kind of tours.Only very few Chinese tour companies have experience and relations to do the application works. So to found a reliable tour company is most important for your great idea, or your plan will be dead at the China boarder. Here recommended an reliable tour company for theose who might be interested in this great plan. China Exploration has been operating this adventure over 10 years, many individual tourist and tour companies have realized their dream through their service. .

There was a newspaper report on a Brit lady pensioner who go into her tired old Talbot coachbuilt, non turbo, after her husband died and drove east until the Pacific got in the way.

She got her visas at the borders when she got there.
After how ever long it took.

Apparently, the difficulties only exist in the mind.

It was on TV as well - The Silk Route Motorcaravan Network. click on China 2002 then 'As Seen on TV' and 'What the Papers Say'

as I understand it she was part of a group - The Silk Route Motorcaravan Club. - but it probably made a better story as a lone traveller.

Hi if you go here: The Silk Route Motorcaravan Network. you can see the group she went with. Do a bit of further reading and you will learn of the hoops they had to jump through to get there.

Entering and travelling round China using a motorcaravan is fraught with difficulty unless one has a contract with a Chinese agency, a key element of which is that the group is accompanied by a guide throughout.
