On and off for many years.
We are just looking at possibilities for our proposed trip to Italy in September. I had this mad idea that we could get a ferry to Santander and then from Barcelona to Rome. The quote for 2 adults plus sub-7 metre motorhome (return) on the Barcelona to Rome ferry was over 1,000 euros which included an early booking discount.

I think we will be looking at alternative routes........ the question is do we drive from South East Scotland to Newcastle and go via The Netherlands or via Hull or drive down to Dover. Each plan has advantages and disadvantages of course.

Our destination in Italy is near Pescara.

I think it would be quicker and cheaper to cross Dover Calais free motorway through Belgium and Luxembourg into north east France down to basil through Switzerland and into Italy near lake como.

@Puddleduck is quoting a return price so double the €374 price for one way . . .

Given the distance it's no different to the old Harwich to Esbjerg crossing or what we pay on Norrona from Hirtshals to the Faroes.

If you have the time a lot cheaper to take the tunnel and see some of France on the way there.

Depending on what time you have got I would go though germany and Austria , motorway all the way if you want or B roads if you want a dawdle through some wonderful country side, we did it last year down to venice then back across Italy and also toured up the west side of France , all in five weeks , no rush.

Sorry should have added it didn't cost much more than your proposed ferry.

When we went to Lake Garda we did the Newcastle crossing, if you book that early enough it makes sense rather than driving south. The last time I spoke to them on the phone they said they would allow me to use Tesco vouchers even though their website doesn't state this, that was for last summer unfortunately they had no space on our dates so went via hull.
We have used the Newcastle crossing twice in late September and if memory serves me right it was under £400 return, last time was 2016
