I have just upgraded my Carthago chic c line to 4800kg i did this to get my rear axle up to 2700kg

My question is how much payload do you need to be comfortable and not worry about over loading

I have about 1300kg of payload which is huge compared to my old motorhome

What do you have or dont have

I up plated our Hymer from 4500Kgs, up to 5500Kgs, and the GTM from 5200Kgs to 6500Kgs.

I have just arranged up plating of the Flair, from 6000Kgs to 6850Kgs, and the GTM from 9000Kgs to 9500Kgs.

I prefer to up plate to the maximum, even if I know I'll not use all of the extra payload, knowing for certain that I'll never be done for overloading. ;) It's the same licence category, so no problem there.............................unless I lose my HGV and my C1 due to ill health issues.

Cheers,

Jock. :)

700kg, which isn’t enough.

Are you on the Alko Maxi chassis? Did you have to make changes such as air assistance to get it up that high? I am OK for MGW but I am getting close to the 2500kg limit on my resr axle.

As for your question we are OK with a payload of less than 800kg on my Hymer but, as, I have said, we are struggling to get it far enough forward

Absolute minimum 700kg, even that is tight for two people.
Our van is 4500 kg and has over 1350kg payload axles plated at 2300 kg front, 2500 kg rear.
Fully loaded with full tanks we have 300 kg spare on the rear, 350 kg spare on the front and 300 kg spare on the Gross.

To uprate the rear to 2700kg you will need air and new rims & tyres.

Yes i had to change the standard alloy wheels i went for goldschmitt wheels with a load rating of 1350kg each
Change both rear tyres to 120/121 load rating
And fit rear air suspension

I thought you had air suspension lenny, if so why have you not up graded to 4800kg is it that you just dont need it as you are well in on your weights stated

On paper we have just under 600kg.payload.

when weighed, with grand daughter and her stuff, half water and half diseal, no bikes, but all our stuff and dog , came in at 3280.kg. We don’t have an awning.

so another 60kg of water to full. 36kgs of diseal to full and 32kg for bikes keeps us with around 100kg for luxuries(hic).

chausson 510 3500kgs.which can sleep 4

so would agree around 600kgs payload is around the minimum mark for 2 people, with full tank of fuel and water.

The average Funster couple gets by with 400kg. But that is being careful and travelling with only 20l of water.

The water you carry is definatley a significant variable.

full up we can carry 120litres of water (120kgs) So if ever stopped and a bit over weight, it is easily dumped.
we wild camp on our travels and find approximatly 60 litres keeps us going for 3 to 4 nights before having to fill up with water.

our M.I.R.O on the CoC is, i recall just under 2900kg.

so our weighbridge weight of 3280kg as described above, is a shade under 400kg.(y)

That would be no good to me personally Jim 20l of water as we like to wild a lot and 20lts of water would not last us a day

Lots will say the the same. But we’re talking averages. yy

Is it time to lobby to update the 3500kg C1 licence issue to reflect the bloating of modern vehicles. 5000kg is easy to achieve and would give the manufacturers some decent wriggle room to innovate.

Semi air £2150
Wheels £950 if steel dont change
Tyres £200
Paperwok £180

Drives loads better with rear air i also upgraded front coil springs to heavy duty ones but you dont have too, i now feel like i ride over pot holes rather than crashing through them

Thanks. I know Mick and SAP and they are very good. They fitted my levelling jacks the year before last. Due to go up later in the year for its 2 yearly check. ...................... I am now worried that this thread will cost me a lot of money.

I have got 16" Hymer alloy wheels, but do not know the load rating. Was the semi air just on the rear? We have factory fitted uprated springs on the front.

If you go to SAP ask for a funster discount ... I got £100 off! :giggle:

I`ve posted this before:-

Quote:- Which brings me back to the "Argument" that the B1 "weight" classification needs uprating by at least 1/2 a tonne. A 4 tonne rating would not make any difference to drive-ability, but would take away a lot of stress and extra expense for many, especially those over 70. The MEDICAL raison, would still apply just as it now does for those of any age. And to so do would remove (one of) the current "Ageist" agenda`s beloved of bureaucracy.
When one looks at the "ability" of the chassis/cab combinations used in the manufacture of motorhomes in general. They are the same units that are used and abused and in some (many?) cases overloaded, in commercial use, day in day out. bearing that in mind it is a miracle that far more accidents do not occur, and is a testament to the strength of construction of said units. Upgrading tyres is about the only thing I would be tempted to change. Unquote.

I am however not holding my breath here, as the chances of anything happening, is remote, Even despite the fact that any "EU" influence is about to be removed.

BTW. for those interested, the limit in the USA is far higher, I was Legally insured and able to drive my 9 tonne R-V, despite being unable to do the same in the UK. The US R-V scene has few if any accident reports related to age when applied to R-V`s, some of which are seriously heavy. Even Triple towing is allowed, We regularly saw 5-Er`s towing a boat for example.
