Pushing a Suzuki Cobra hard in the 1970s would see under 20 mpg..............:Eeek::ROFLMAO:

My Land Rover Defender based MH, with over cab bed and running near it's 3.5 ton limit does on average 28mpg. Thats with a 300TDI, big intercooler and no electronics and my right foot is the cruise control. And the speedo is not to far off what the satnav reads.:thumb:

That's pretty good going for a 300TDi.
Mine only used to get 27mpg in standard form...

What size engine is in your Merc ? our Auto-Sleeper Sprinter based Merc is 2.1 TDCi Automatic and we average 25.6mpg. Worst we got was 21.65 mpg and the best 30.26 mpg but I do drive like a nun and use the cruise control whenever its safe to do so.

I reckon a genuine 30mpg is as likely as gassing!! :ROFLMAO:

I get virtually the same mpg as OP, we have a Mercedes Sprinter based auto 3.0, the actual cc is near this, but V5 says 3000cc (6 cylinder I think, sorry not at all techy) we are 5 ton max though with 6 wheels

It doesn't make a deal of difference how fast we go, but I never go over 65, usually 60 on motorways, don't bother with cruise control, not convinced it helps with mpg. we have been down at 18 and over 24 on a typical 200 + mile run. Computer and actual refills seem to match quite well

But a point made by DevonBeeKeeper, made we wonder about mine, when I manoeuvre at home before leaving, having been stood, it sometimes feels like my brakes are slightly on, like handbrake only half released, being an auto I only use Park don't use handbrake, although I do pull it on and off each time out to make sure cable stays free for MOT. When I am underway I am not aware of similar restrictions, including pulling away from lights etc. no performance issue at all there, but could slightly binding brakes cause enough drag to affect mpg? There is no noise or smell from brakes at all. Anybody else get this, I might run a new thread

Before it was converted and was a standard hard top body, the best I got was 35mpg when touring France in 2001. It is well maintained with the big Allysport intercooler and Hiclones fitted, and steady driving.

Hi, I have a 2.8jtd 2004 Ducato remapped. I drive quiet hard, had the gvw upped to 4000kg as I was always over 3500kg and get around 23/25 mpg

It's a hobby and pastime, the fact you won't get consumption at the level of the family car or van come to that, shouldn't really be a great consideration. After all we do carry everything, and in our case, that does include the kitchen sink! ;0)

Having read the OP my faith has been restored in old school Mercedes technology. My 24 year old 2.9 turbo 5 pot running at 4.6 ton towing a trailer with a Smart car on does 19/22 MPG on Bio and 20/24 on fossil diesel. I dont nurse it otherwise it would stop. Once wound up to 56/60 MPH it sits there happily until a slight incline comes into sight. Then you have to floor it. By the sounds of things Mercedes have not moved on that much in the last 20 years. It is serviced at the correct intervals and oil changes at 5000 miles, regardless of where I am at the time. Tyre pressures do make a difference and I run 70 PSI front and 75 PSI on the twin rears.

Mine had the big intercooler and regular servicing too but, thinking about it, it may have had something to do with it being an automatic.
I've never owned the manual version to compare, is yours manual?

My MoHo, Autotrail Apache 700SE / Fiat 2.8 does 31 average to the gallon (several times tank full to tank full) that's driven at max 58mph, I am meticulous about tyre pressures and have found on Michelin Agilas 16inch run at 75psi which gives us the best mpg and comfort.

I will say that the mpg drops substantially once up around the 70mph mark.

My last MoHo was 3 mpg better overnight when I found the tracking was toeing out quite a bit - has to be one of the worst mpg 'affecters' and will cost a fortune in tyres too.

Regards,

Trikeman. :winky:

I never really check it to be honest.

My new van seems to be more economical than my 2008 van , but as a family we use a lot less fuel than we used to 3-4 years ago. Economical cars, using local campsites and even walking to the shops:)Eeek:)

I begrudge the Government the tax.

I had a tuned Suzuki GT750, slide carbs, chambers, ported etc. 15 to the gallon if I tried hard enough plus two stroke oil! I loved that bike.

Reading these posts I'm more than happy with what my 8100cc V8 Vortec is getting sucking on LPG

I too had a 350 LC, a guy round the corner had 500 LC in Malboro colours  although I always wanted the RG500 before moving onto bigger 4 strokes :thumb:

I would have loved to have had an RG500, but family commitments came along, I later had serious big 4 strokes, but you can't beat the feeling of riding a fast stroker.
