We have been without a functioning kitchen at our home for 5 months now.
Paid over 1K initial deposit.
Slop builder's bucket for the kitchen waste.
Washing machine hose passed out of the kitchen window to wash our clothes.
Wickes by the way.
We still haven't got a start date either.

How long would you wait before cancelling ?

Sounds about correct for wickes. Rubbish to deal with, and making plenty of money doing it.

Extremely long and inconsiderate length of time.
Email their head office and tell them you give them one more month (covid restrictions depending) to make a start or you'll cancel due to unreasonable time scale.
Get a local builder/joiner to do the job.

I removed the kitchen myself as I had a verbal agreement with Wickes of when the new 9K kitchen would be fitted { I had a redundant kitchen front door removed and 1/2 bricked up { professionally } with a window fitted { professionally } so that work top could be fitted there instead }.
One subcontractor was sent out, He didn't want to do the job { it transpired after a long wait }.
Another subcontractor was sent out { again after another long wait it transpired He didn't want to do the job either }
Another subcontractor is being sent out sometime ???
Our kitchen is 9FT X 10FT approx so not large.
We just want a kitchen fitted.
I was going to fit one Myself but the idea was to have one fitted to be quicker with less hassle.
The Salesman is a really nice genuine guy but Wickes use subcontractors that cherry pick their jobs.

Getting there!
I would have waited about a week after the agreed start date if you were informed of the delay before hand and about 3 days if not.

He paid over 10% I'd class that as a big deposit .

Could you not take delivery of the kitchen you have ordered and just fit it yourself. Get a good discount against the (extortionate) installation fee and some extra for the delay? You'll have it finished in a week 👍

I would say that your kitchen is really too small for a decent contractor at worst it's only 3 double units wide X a couple units deep.it realy is not that difficult to fit yourself.I would advise Wickes that if no one is available to fit your kitchen then you should ask for your money back and go elsewhere for your units. I used to template kitchens for a granite worktop company, your local builder probably isn't the best person to install a decent kitchen 😳. Numerous times I've had to point out ridiculous mistakes to builders including one who unbelievably just fitted all the base units parallel to the old existing floor which was more than inch higher at one end.

My son is a carpenter specialising in fitting kitchens. He won't work for any of the DIY shed companies and just does installations for main contractors or individuals because of the bad reputation that these companies have. If you can, change the Wickes contract to supply only then get an independent fitter, ideally recommended by someone that you know.

I've asked for a supply only price and I've also asked for the kitchen to be delivered { No reply to both questions to date }

Nothing over the top ordered. No dishwasher, no waste disposal unit, single sink, composite type worktop { not marble }.
I just want it delivering & fitting.

From my experience of dealing with them you have to be very hard, loud, and difficult to get anything resolved by wickes. I would recommend a full tantrum and demand all your money back, and tell them you no longer want the kitchen anymore (be this true or not). That way they are loosing money as they are all on commission.
if you do get it delivered be very very careful of damage and only sign for it stating that you are unable to full check all items. Also be aware that there is a very long process getting the worktops done by them, as they have a very complicated way of doing it. So once kitchen units are in it can be several weeks after till it is complete.

Shiny light grey with marble effect composite work top.
The Salesman is a good guy, it's the subcontract fitters that is the cause of the hold up.

Which composite tops?

I have one that Wickes also supply in my van:

They are not hard to fit if you know how and have the right tools. Nice though (y)

I have threatened to cancel if the kitchen is not fitted by the end of this month.
It was meant to be a dream kitchen not a nightmare one.
Don’t threaten, take a written or typed letter in cancelling order and requesting the deposit back into your account ASAP, if you paid by card demand they pay it back onto card there and then. I don’t expect they will want to do that but show them you are pissed off and you can go elsewhere, though not sure where as most of the budget kitchen firms have no control over fitters as they are all subbies.
