How do you tighten a Dometic window stay? (1 Viewer)

One of my PVC PVC windows won't stay open, it droops closed It's just a single telescopic chromed stay that expands from the middle. There's a black plastic ring there that looks like it could help but it's already past finger tight and I don't want to go breaking it (just yet)

Any hints or tips?

Can you dismantle the stay so that you can examine it? Sounds like it's worn out but it might be bodge-able.

Unfortunately I'm on a site this weekend so pictures and dismantling are not really on. I'll have a quick Google and see if I can find a Blue Peter one

I've never seen that one but it might be bad news, it looks like a gas strut and if it's lost pressure it's replacement time. I may be wrong of course.
