Just wondering how people use their motorhomes? We have a dog and we generally use CLs or CSs. We only use the site as a place to stay overnight. During the day we drive somewhere, park up and go for walks. Any planning for a holiday involves finding plenty of places to park reasonably near to the site.
Getting a bus from a site isn't an option for us because of the dog. Planning is always an issue as husband is of the opinion that "we'll find somewhere we can park", I like it all planned from the start. A work colleague of mine used to accuse me of micro-managing, can't think what he means really.
The New Forest is just amazing for holidays like this, we go several times a year.
Any other suggestions of similar places that would work for us will be appreciated.

We usually go to Europe for the weather and the variety, not to mention the savings on overnight stops. Our motorhome at 6.8m is small enough to find somewhere to park in most places as with two dogs public transport is a bit out of the question.
In the UK forests are great.

I also have a dog.
I like to find a site within a short walking distance of a market town with several hostelries & some countryside walks...
Such as Castleton.

Why can’t you take your dog on the bus? We have never been refused except in France.
She is a rescue and despite having lived with us for 7 years still has huge anxiety issues. I really couldn't see her getting on a bus. It was hard enough getting her in the motorhome for the first time, no problem, now as motorhome means walks.

We like Funster meets, Warners or Apple Tree shows and use the location as a base to explore locally - bikes, tow car or walking as appropriate.
When we use a site we normally go for CL sites as the cats can go for a walk without lots of other people and vans around.

We wildcamp mostly; at a push a CS/CL. Very rarely use hook up. Try to get away at weekends, but being in the SE time/distance to travel is troublesome for a weekend stay. Like to limit ourselves to 2-2.5 hrs travel on a Fri after work (arriving 9pm), but that doesn't get you very far down here! Wales is very MH friendly/tolerant for longer trips.

Spain drives us mad. One place - fine no problem. Return journey - no go! So we now do not try as trekking back to the site and then going again is a hassle. A great shame as our Cairn loves a journey by bus.

That's pretty much as we do too, also with a dog. We're just back from a few magical days in the Peak District and have also really enjoyed Wales, Devon,Cornwall and real highlight was last year's road trip fully exploring the Outer Hebrides and North West Scotland as well as Dumfries & Galloway. The New Forest is just a 10 minute drive away from home - beautiful too.

.......and a great Norfolk road trip too, exploring its NW coast.

Our main modus operandi is to drive 20 miles to Newhaven and get on a ferry.

Don't do planing have a rough idea of were we want to go or which country and go.

Aires or wild camping don't like sites but will use occasionally if nowhere else to stop or by a beach so I can use my Paddleboard.

We use ours virtually every weekend from April-Oct, holidays and weekends are much easier with the MH and wifey being a wheelchair user, living 3 hrs from places like Garda and Bled helps too. Thursday evening and we are up and away.,
Still fly and cruise but wouldn't be without a MH.

When touring Europe we use Aires or sites and in U.K. we use CLs or sites and explore in toad.

Pretty much what we do apart from the planning!. Also don't use public transport as a bit much with two large young dogs. One of those is pretty nervous about going anywhere new, and 32 kilos of stubbornness is a bit much to man handle onto a bus. The other one is go anywhere, do anything, dont give a damn.
We also use the motorhome for day trips and are prepared to overnight if the mood takes us.
Been all over Europe, mainly France, Germany and Italy, all great for our style of motorhoming, but these days happy to stay more local.
We have a 7m van which is the smallest that we are comfortable living in and the largest that we are comfortable driving around the places we like to explore.

I'm with you. We plan and book everything in advance. The Wildies and FLTs tell me I am not doing it properly, but the golden rule is, it is YOUR bus so you do what suits YOU best.

The only wrong way to do motorhoming is to leave it on your drive.

We have a 6m PVC which fits on our drive. We tend to watch the weather forecast and just go at short notice for the working week when the sites are quieter. Off to north Norfolk tomorrow for our third week this year. Love being able to get up and go with minimal planning.

The old double deckers with the rear open door were best for dogs as you could fasten the lead to the handrail.

We like being away in the van, but struggle a bit because neither of us can walk very far. We get a bit cross about site descriptions that say easy walk to village/town/bus but when you look on google maps it is further than we can easily make, and look round what ever is at the other end, or there is no pavement so can’t use our mobility scooters. We tend to explore in the van, 6.4m so can park more often than not.
Much prefer smaller sites and CLs.
We have planned a trip to SW Scotland in May, generally spending only one night on a site and driving and stopping to explore scenery etc during the day. But it is all planned because we felt we needed to book sites.

Never book anywhere abroad but found during covid that this was essential in the uk

Same here. He is over 12yo now and we have had him over 8 years. Whatever happened in those first four years since he arrived in the UK from Rep. Ireland I have no idea. He is reactive to buses/trucks/trains and motorcycles. As soon as he hears a bus or in fact any large diesel engine he goes mental.

Oddly he prefers the motorhome to the car! He has a harness that goes around the metal of the bed slide-out extension and sleeps on his bed....

We use ours as and when SWHTBO in not at work, as that for NHS that rotates between weekends off and in, we will go of somewhere for 3 - 4 days, just been up and around Pickering also for planned longer breaks, Cornwall's on the cards this year, we also use it to attend Scooter rallies and Northern souls events/weekends as it beats £450+ or so for a B&B or when I'm DJing at such and I'll have my gear in the garage or Scooter on the back

Sites only , we don’t like Aires.
No dogs or kids.
Van in storage.
Use the van all year round.
UK and Europe.
Our motorhome is our luxury apartment on wheels.
We are excellent cooks so use the van kitchen a LOT .
Electric bikes and public transport to explore off site .
I love tech , if you see a man in a motorhome at Chatsworth this Easter wearing a Sony VR2 headset fighting machine dragons and dinosaurs or kayaking that will be me 🤣

We used to have the same issues. Ours is also a rescue and he’s also 12 yrs. If we went to any farming area where there was shooting I’d have to carry him back to the car. No problems these days as he’s gone a bit deaf which is a blessing for him and us. He’s never been so excited to get out into the country!

Doggy photo please! 😄

Surely the whole ethos of motorhoming is the freedom to use it as you want and that there is no 'right' or wrong way to use it. Park an MOT failure in the yard and keep chickens in it or full time in a Concorde, more likely something in-between - it's what you can afford and want to do.

Don't do planning have a rough idea of were we want to go or which country and go.

20 mile drive to Newhaven for me too, and driving off the ferry onto the generally uncluttered French roads with the opportunity to overnight wherever I want without pre-booking is both exciting and relaxing.
Unless I have in mind a specific scenic route or a place of architectural, historic or gastronomic interest virtually the only time I make a decision about which way to go is when I approach a roundabout or a crossroads.
I can understand why I see so few French motorhomes over here.
