Here is a question for anyone who know the Lake district well.
I am currently at Braithwaite in my swift Rio, which is 2.27Mtrs wide. Today I tried to drive to Borrowdale/Seatoller ( I wish to photograph Borrowdale mill) The post code I have for the NT carpark is CA12 5XN. This takes me on the B5289 past the Lodore hotel. However when I get close to the hotel my satnav brings up a warning that the road ahead has a width restriction on 6.5ft! I was perplexed by this as larger motorhome and caravans were using this road but did not wish to put myself a position that I could not get out of so turned back.
Do any of you funsters know this road? is there a restriction that would prevent me getting to Borrowdale?.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Also, if you are replying to this you can probably answer part 2! Are there any roads I should avoid if I want to travel from Braithwaite to Butermere?

I think the width restriction is further on when starting to climb Honister Pass.

I drove that route last year (in a car). You are OK up as far as Seatoller and the NT car park there - all two lanes. Past the NT car park you start on Honister pass, which you want to keep clear of!

cheers,

Robin

Thinking about it, it's probably the Rosthwaite part which looks quite narrow, double decker buses get through Ok though.

There is a pretty narrow bit at Rosthwaite. Suggest you have a look on Google Maps and 'drive through' from north to south using Street View. You will see the narrow bit, along with its white paint highlighting the squeeze! Our campervan (PVC) is 2.2 m wide and I think we have been through there but it must have been tight.

For travel from Braithwaite to Buttermere the Newlands Valley is gorgeous and relatively quiet, but again narrow in places. We haven't done the full run to Buttermere that way, but it should be ok if you take deep breaths in certain places. I think that going by Whinlatter would be a bit roomier, but I am not sure.

Good luck!

I dunno, I wouldn't drive to Buttermere via Honister, especially in a front wheel drive Motorhome, the start of Honister Pass is very steep.

I think it may be too late in the year now but there is a circular bus route, Keswick, Borrowdale, Honister Pass, Buttermere Lorton, Whinlatter Pass, Braithwaite, Keswick.
A day return allowed you to get on and off when you wanted.

We were staying at Lorton site and enjoyed the day off driving.

Just checked ....ends 7 November.

Oops, yeah, I forgot that narrow spot. Fortunately it's just a few yards. Once you are past Seatoller then it's all like that...

Easier to get to Buttermere from the other end (via Crummock Water) in a large vehicle I would have thought?

cheers,

Robin
