Does anyone know if there's money to be made in house sitting or is it usually a free place to stay in lieu of looking after the place and animals plants garden etc.
Anyone done it?
Cheers

Well I know there are websites that organise it. Not everyone has friends or family available.

Not long enough, but a little common sense helps..........
Been doing it on and off for 3 years and simply put no it not a money making process. Some times it pet sitting or just house sitting. We have used our MH in some places and others just arrived in our car. We have stayed in some nice places for 2/4 weeks in UK, Germany, France and Spain and had this year a place in France sorted for 3+ months, but we have other plans now which are UK based.

I used to do it for a few years and there's quite a bit of money to be made in House Sitting.

It was mainly to do with looking after the owners dogs, as many as half a dozen, as well as the house while they were away on holiday.

The saving on the cost of kennelling dogs far outweighed the charge of the House sitter.

Not only does the Owner have the dog/dogs stay in their own home with decent walks, same food and familiar surrounding but any other pets (cat/fish/chickens/ferrets) and garden or house plants watered regularly all help to give peace of mind when the Owner is lapping up the sunshine on a foreign shore.

It's a win-win situation!

The House sitter has to be trustworthy with good references and if you're prepared to be away from your own home for a week or two and treat the Owners home with the same respect you'd treat your own then, usually be word of mouth, you'll get recommended bookings on a regular basis.

In the bleak mid-winter you can be sat in the evening by a roaring fire, tinny in hand, food in the fridge/freezer and have to put the dog/dogs out into the garden for their final walk - while being paid well for the privilege.

It doesn't suit everyone but for those willing to be by themselves, often far from the madding crowds, it can a nice little earner to top up your finances.

We've used housesitters on a number of occasions. We used Housecarers.com and no money changed hands. It was simply the use of our house in exchange for looking after our dogs and keeping the house safe. It was brilliant for us at the time but now we always take the dogs with us to Europe. Mags

Received a house sitting notice the other day, but as we are going back to UK for a few months this might be of interest to a member of MHF:

Oliva is on the coast not to far from Denia. I think you will need to register with the web site to get full details etc.
